Xinyi Zhu (CI – Chinese ’24) details her experience working for Translation for Elders in Philadelphia.
In the chilly Philly where I worked for the non-profit Translators for Elders (TFE), I was no longer interpreting for people I never met on screen, but individual figures with their own unique stories and identities. This is what I found to be so unique with community interpreting. My time with TFE in Philadelphia proved to be an invaluable experience that not only enriched my skills but also instilled in me a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment.
At TFE, our mission was clear: to bridge the language gap for senior groups in Philadelphia, ensuring they had access to essential services and experiences. Through pro-bono language services, including translation and interpretation, we empowered elders who faced linguistic barriers. This hands-on experience provided me with insights into the ethical considerations of language practice while deepening my understanding of clients’ needs—a foundation crucial for my future career development. My responsibilities ranged from making important calls on behalf of elders to translating crucial documents related to insurance and healthcare. I also had the privilege of providing interpretation for an informational session on US citizenship—an opportunity to truly make a difference in the lives of those I served. Going above and beyond, I leveraged my knowledge of localization to establish a website for a local home-health agency, enhancing elders’ access to quality care at home.
Engaging in real-life scenarios allowed me to apply the knowledge gained at MIIS, refining my language proficiency and interpreting expertise. This internship has sharpened my skills in community interpreting, broadening my horizons in cross-cultural communication—a vital asset in today’s interconnected world.
Moreover, being situated in the historic city of Philadelphia, often hailed as the cradle of liberty, was an enriching experience in itself. Immersed in the rich tapestry of American history and culture, I gained a deeper understanding of the nation’s identity—an attribute that I believe will shape my future endeavors in meaningful ways.
In summary, my internship with TFE in Philadelphia was not just a professional endeavor; it was a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. It reinforced my passion for language advocacy and equipped me with the skills and insights necessary to navigate the complexities of cross-cultural communication. With unwavering enthusiasm and gratitude, I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to continue making a positive impact in the field of international communication.
