Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Internship
Summer 2017
This summer I participated in an internship at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office in Salinas, California as a Classification Intern. This position entailed working at the Monterey County Jail under the instruction of the Criminal Intelligence Specialist working there. In this position, I was given projects pertaining to various aspects of criminal intelligence analysis, including but not limited to the utilization of intelligence gathering techniques and tracking of crime trends. One of the highlights of my experience at the Sheriff’s Office was the ability to use my Spanish language skills in a professional environment.
My internship allowed me the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge that I have gained at MIIS to real-life issues. As such, it was an incredible experience that both allowed me to grow as a professional and as a student. From this internship, I am able to bring back to MIIS new knowledge of law enforcement processes, a better understanding of various aspects of criminal justice, and a knowledge of open-source intelligence gathering techniques / tools.
My internship proved to be highly relevant to my degree program of Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies at MIIS. I am thankful to be allowed the opportunity to continue with this internship past the summer, and hope to learn even more valuable skills that I can share with my fellow classmates.
