This clip from Saturday Night Live employs the Hillbilly stereotype in a humorous way. This reflects the general social acceptance the stereotype has in American pop culture. The skit exaggerates the stupidity of the hillbilly through language and content. The way in which the characters speak accentuates their lack of education. The actors talk with a limited vocabulary and a struggle to articulate their thoughts and feelings. Additionally, the characters are animated, overly loud and energetic which accentuates their inability to conduct themselves properly in a professional setting. The content of this video also assists in framing their stupidity. The stories being told in the “Appalachian Emergency Room” greatly “other” the hillbilly from middle and upper-class America. The characters casually talking about throwing lawn darts at each other or nailing two-by-fours to their body creates an image that these events are not uncommon in Appalachia. Contrarily, the viewers of this show are entertained by its absurdity and the cultural distance it has from themselves. These stories also support the idea that the hillbilly is responsible for their own circumstance. Each character`s story highlights that the injuries suffered are self-inflicted and simple common sense would have saved them.
The dress and physical makeup of these characters also highlight elements of the hillbilly stereotype. The dirty, ragged and mismatched clothing supports the poor and dirty depictions of the hillbilly in media. Additionally, their appearance denotes the misconception that Appalachian “hillbillies” care little about themselves and that they live in filth. The other common stereotype seen in this clip is the whiteness that is attached to the hillbilly. Every character in the clip is white. This ignores the diversification within the Appalachian region and supports the social construct that being a hillbilly also means being poor and white.
