Dear History majors and minors,

I wanted to let you know that all of the professors in the department will be working diligently over the next two weeks to be prepared to move courses online.

The next two weeks are officially spring break, so professors would not expect you to turn in work or take exams during this time. Be assured of our flexibility as we all navigate this challenging transition and rewrite our syllabi.

For those of you completing theses this semester, I will reach out to you with some guidelines and revised deadlines and protocols for submission of your work.  If you need letters from your advisor or me to access sources at other institutions do not hesitate to write me or your advisor.

I spoke to the library circulation earlier today to find out about books that many of you may have checked out. With the exception of reserve materials, please contact the library if you would like to extend your due date and discuss returning your books by mail if necessary.

For anybody considering writing a thesis next year, we are extending the deadline for a preliminary proposal of your plan to April 10 to allow us to prepare for registration for courses in the Spring. Contact professors via email with your ideas. Here is the old form and deadlines:  http://www.middlebury.edu/system/files/media/Honors%20Thesis%202020-21.pdf

For Febs 2021 majors and minors, I’ll follow up with an audit form after March 30th. After you consult ‘Degree Works’ and touch base with your advisor with questions, you can complete the form before April 15 and send it to me via e-mail.

And finally, for the seniors graduating in May. We understand that these changes affect you differently in your last semester. Please be in touch.  We will be in touch as we think of creative ways to recognize your achievements and your ‘history’ at Middlebury. I’m open to any ideas to connect, communicate, and celebrate!

I will attempt to keep my regular office hours over the coming weeks, so please email or call extension 3167 if questions arise. Alternatively, you may contact me to set up a meeting via zoom during those hours or at another time. Please create an account if you have not done so yet: https://zoom.us/ent?zcid=3172.

That’s all for now. Apologies for yet another long Middlebury email. We will all be getting more of them in the future.

All the best,

DJD
