Dr. John Balcom, a professor in the Translation and Interpretation department at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, edited and translated the book entitled “Zero and Other Fictions,” written by Huang Fan.
Dr. John Balcom, a professor in the Translation and Interpretation department at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a translator of Chinese Literature, recently translated “After Many Autumns: A Collection of Chinese Buddhist Literature” into English.
While most practitioners in the language business understand the critical importance of managing terminology, very few translators, let alone interpreters, actually create comprehensive, project-specific dictionaries. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the lack of powerful, easy-to-use, low-cost tools for collecting and maintaining multilingual vocabulary. TermWiki, a new web-based terminology management solution developed by CSOFT in collaboration with professor Uwe Muegge, is a free community solution that allows global organizations as well as individual freelancers to manage term collections of any size without installing or buying any software.
After presenting TermWiki to the academic community at the Leipzig International Conference on Translation Studies (LICTRA) last month, Uwe Muegge has been invited by the publisher of tcworld to contribute an article on TermWiki and collaborative terminology management to a special print issue of the online magazine tcworld. In his fourth publication this year, Muegge discusses the implications of not managing terminology in the context of a large, multilingual translation project, and how TermWiki revolutionizes authoring, translation, and review processes.
Learning a language can open up a whole new world to people. Many students pursue language study precisely because they want to get involved in making this world a better place. International development has always had a strong pull for language students, offering a chance to travel and experience other cultures while doing good. It is a broad field where one may leverage special interests and knowledge, like health care, law, or business, into a fulfilling exciting career.

A recent “Career Focus” feature article in The Language Educator highlighted the importance of combining language skills, experience living and working abroad, technical expertise in areas such as business and public administration, with characteristics such as being pro-active, self-motivated, adaptable and able to embrace the unexpected.

MIIS TESOL alumna Janine Poreba recently received news that her Applied Linguistics Research (ALR) project will be published in the Winter 2010 issue of the CATESOL Journal. She writes,

Recently, I dusted off my ALR project (“Negotiation Strategies in Two-Way Conversation Partnerships: Their Use and Usefulness”) and re-read it. I’m working at Santa Monica College, and some colleagues and I are starting a Conversation Exchange Program here, so I wanted to see if I’d uncovered any useful information back in my grad school days. Sure enough, I had, and what’s more, the paper was still interesting to read. I made some changes and submitted it to the CATESOL Journal, and I just found out that it’ll be published in their Winter 2010 issue.
