Call for Presentation Proposals for Global Education Conference, North Cyprus

GLOBAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE – GEC-2012June 25-27, 2012

Jasmine Court Hotel, Kyrenia – North Cyprus
We would like to invite you to submit proposals for the Global Education Conference, which aims to provide a platform where latest trends in education are presented and discussed in a friendly and multinational environment. Proposals can be either in Turkish or English and for papers, panels, roundtables, posters/demonstrations, and workshops. Furthermore if  the presenter is unable to attend the oral presentation, the virtual presentations and video presentations are available. The deadline for abstract submission is 01 June 2012 and for full article submission 24 June 2012.GEC’12 conference is supported by Cyprus International University, Sakarya University, Izmir University, Pegem-A publishing and will take place on June 25-27, 2012 at the Jasmine Court Hotel, Kyrenia, North Cyprus. All full paper presentations will be published in an online proceeding book of GEC’12 and the selected papers will be published in:

Kathi Bailey Presents in Japan

GSTILE faculty member Kathi Bailey gave two presentations in Japan in late October. One was a talk about using dialogue journals with university level EFL students, which was delivered at Kansai University.

The other was the keynote presentation about communication strategies, which she gave at the “e-LINC” conference. The conference was held at Kwansei Gakuin University. (The “e-LINC” organization is the electronic Language Instruction Network Consortium.)

Call for Proposals: The 2012 Graduate Student Forum

A wonderful opportunity for students in the MATESOL program has come up: The 2012 Graduate Student Forum is now accepting proposals for their meeting on March 28, 2012. The forum is accepting proposals for presentations in the following three categories:

1. Paper

“An oral summary, with occasional reference to notes or a text, which describes or discusses something that the presenter is doing or has done in relation to theory or practice.”

2. Demonstration

“Shows, rather than discusses, a technique for teaching or testing.”

3. Poster Session

“Short, informal discussions with other participants while a self-explanatory exhibit is on display.”

For those interested, here is some very important information:

  1. In order to participate in the forum, you must be registered. You can register online here.
  2. All proposals must be submitted online by 7:00PM EST (4:00PM PST), November 11, 2011.
  3. Proposals sent by physical mail/post will be disqualified.
  4. You will be notified by e-mail about the status of your submission by December 9, 2011.

BUILD Language Classes Begin

In case the BUILD Program representatives somehow missed visiting your new-student orientation, or, perhaps, you’ve been out of the country doing Peace Corps, we’d like to remind you that free weekly language classes are being offered by the BUILD Program.

This semester, 14 different languages, from French to Farsi, are being offered. BUILD has also expanded to offer additional levels of language classes, so if you’ve just returned from 3 years in Japan but never really studied the language, you’re able to choose between the beginner or the intermediate level class.

Second International Conference on Language Education

This summer, Dr. Kathy Bailey traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, where she attended the second International Conference on Language Education. The conference was put on by Sabanci University, a private research institute that is ranked third in academic achievement in Turkey.

Dr. Bailey gave a workshop on communication strategies during her time there in June. Experts from all over the world were invited to share thoughts on language education and linguistic research. Dr. Bailey is a noted expert in fields such as educational research, assessment, language program administration, and teacher education.

Dr. Bailey also gave a plenary presentation on dialogue journals, part of an ongoing project which is being co-authored by two TESOL alumni: David Chisea and Ryan Damerow. David Chisea is in his second year as an English Language Fellow in China, where he works extensively with teacher training. His recent work includes teacher training for Peace Corps volunteers. Ryan currently works as an administrative assistant for The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (Dr. Kathy Bailey is the current residing president).

34 Japanese students arrived in Monterey from Shimane University on August 1, 2011. They came to the Monterey Institute to study English and experience American culture through the Intensive English Program. They would spend the month of August with eight eager teachers, three  fantastic activity guides, and one incredible cross-cultural coordinator awaited them — all students from our TESOL program.

This symbiotic relationship between Shimane University and the Monterey Institute provides the MATESOL students with the opportunity to implement various principles and practices they have been studying here at the Monterey Institute.

MATESOL students taught classes such as Photojournalism, Introduction to US Culture, and Current Events. The curriculum, designed by the MATESOL students, was tailored to maximize the Shimane students’ interaction with local English speakers. This was accomplished through such classes as Panel Discussion, during which members of the MIIS community visited the classroom and had conversations with the students. During Community Exploration class, the Shimane students were able to practice their conversation skills outside the classroom with visits to the Hopkins Marine Station, the Monterey Fire Department, and Trader Joe’s market.

The Monterey Institute’s MA TESOL degree is a wonderful investment in your professional future, but not many are aware of the one year program track that is available to prospective students.

The 30-unit Advanced Entry MA TESOL degree can be completed in three academic semesters: Fall, Spring, and Summer, with the typical course load of 12-13 units in each of the fall and spring semesters and 5-7 units in the summer session. Ideal candidates for this advanced-entry MA degree have already taken coursework toward a TESOL certificate or degree program.

The MA TESOL degree program at Monterey Institute is distinguished for its solid foundation in the fields of linguistics, language pedagogy and applied linguistics research. Students receive training in a broad range of topics important to the development of language education professionals.

English Language Fellow Courtney Pahl

Courtney Pahl, a 2011 MATESOL Graduate and Language Program Administration (LPA) Certificate holder, is about to start her next chapter of English Language Education in Brazil! Courtney has been selected for the position of English Language Fellow (ELF) at the CasaThomas Jefferson (CTJ) Bi-national Center in Brasilia, Brazil. CJT is an institute for both
linguistic and cultural exchange. There are six CTJ branches located in Brasilia that serveas educational centers for over 15,000 students and nearly 200 faculty members. Courtney’s fellowship will start in February 2012 and continue until November.

During her time in Brazil, Courtney will primarily work as an English instructor. Most of her students will be between the ages of four and 18. In addition to teaching, Courtney will also have the opportunity to take on various other roles and responsibilities, some of which include serving on a faculty supervisory team, coaching fellow English instructors as they prepare to write proposals and present at the Brazilian National TESOL Conference, presenting at various conferences, and preparing and presenting a variety of professional development workshops for local educators.

Courtney is very excited to not only get more experience in the classroom but also help other teachers develop into great language instructors. She is anxious to get her “feet wet” in the supervisory and coaching elements of her ELF position. In fact, she claims that ELF is the ideal job for her at this point in her career, as it will allow her to experience multiple dimensions of English language education.

Courtney is very thankful for the education she gained from the Monterey Institute. In fact, in her interview for the ELF position, the quality and prestige of the institute was highlighted, as well as the value of completing the LPA certificate. Courtney attributes her successful acceptance to the ELF program to the experiences and education she gained from the faculty and staff of the Monterey Institute.

Courtney is looking forward to improving her Portuguese and exploring Brazil!
