The CATESOL Journal is seeking book review submissions for the book review section of their Spring 2013 Journal. The deadline is fast approaching. Please see the message below from Review Editor, Kristi Ridgway.

As the new Review Editor, I need your help in crafting the upcoming Book Review section of The CATESOL Journal. The 2013 edition of The CATESOL Journal will be out in the spring, and the deadline for submissions is fast-approaching. Please consider writing and submitting a Book Review in the next few months. Also, please help spread the word to others by forwarding this information to colleagues and graduate students in our field

The Book Review section is a great way for novices to gain publishing experience and for seasoned educators to publish without the investment required of longer, more research-intensive endeavors.

Book reviews are 500-1,000 words in length and evaluate textbooks (and other teaching media), teacher training books and reference materials; publication dates must be within the last three years (2010 and later). The deadline for submissions for the 2013 edition is

Curriculum Design Trade Fair Wows Guests

MIIS TESOL/TFL candidates wowed guests on May 18th when they presented their original curriculum design projects. Each curriculum was carefully designed for a particular context after the needs and interests of all relevant stakeholders had been assessed. These programs include the Peace Resource Center in Seaside, CA to Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy in Baku, Azerbaijan to an Elementary school on the island nation of Tonga and places in-between.

After forming teams, students engaged with the context they selected and followed the process from needs assessment through creating goals and syllabus frameworks to designing units and lessons. From all this hard work and dedication, MATESOL/MATFL students emerged with marketable curriculum design skills and curricula that they are proud to present to their clients.

The MATESOL/MATFL candidates appreciated the opportunity to solidify and synthesize their knowledge of curriculum design via presentations to guest. Furthermore, the fair gave student peers, faculty and staff the opportunity to see the great accomplishments of  MATESOL/TFL candidates.

MIIS Professor & Alumna Publish Chapter in Book

MIIS Professor Kathleen Bailey and MIIS Alumna Mica Tucci (MATESOL ’12) published a chapter in the book Contextualising EFL for Young Learners: International Perspectives on Policy, Practice and Procedure, edited by Helen Emery & Fíodhna Gardiner-Hyland.

Bailey and Tucci’s chapter is entitled Using Songs in Teaching EFL to Young Learners and is based on their experience using songs to teach English to children. The chapter begins by dealing with the cognitive and affective reasons for getting young children to sing and dance in the language classroom. Then, the chapter discusses practical activities for using songs to teach language.

Congratulations to both Bailey and Tucci for this publication and thank you for your contribution to the profession!

Call for Papers- ABS International

The I teach Kids & Teens Conference – empowering teachers to empower students, welcomes proposals for lectures and workshops that address issues related to the teaching of English to young learners and teens.

The aim of this conference is to bring together ELT academics, researchers, materials developers, and teacher trainers to exchange research findings, ideas, and experiences, on teaching, learning, and assessment. This may be your opportunity to share your knowledge and expertise with hundreds of people in the ELT management field.

It is the responsibility of the Selecting Committee to evaluate all proposals and select a high quality variety of lectures that will meet the needs of a diverse audience.

The Selecting Committee will review all abstracts and will select those which…

a. have a direct relationship to the conference and are relevant to the audience.

b. have a clear and precise organization

c. guarantee the Committee that the speaker knows the subject

d. guarantee the Committee that the presenter has extensive experience and success in conducting teacher-training seminars.

e. are complete, edited, and free of typographical mistakes.

f. are not used to promote or sell the products or services of the speaker or others.

The standard length for the presentations will be of 90 minutes. While the assumption is that the presentation will be largely speaker-centered, presenters are none-the-less encouraged to include and involve their audience, presenting in such a way as to stimulate the interest of the audience. For this reason we strongly discourage the reading aloud of written papers.

Professor John Balcom Spoke at Bernard College

John Balcom (Professor, Chinese T&I) was invited to speak at a conference titled “Pedagogies of Translation: Current methods and Future Prospects,” which was held on May 4–5 at Barnard College in New York. The conference was organized by two professors at Barnard College, Lawrence Venuti and Peter O’Connor . The conference, which was hosted by the Center for Translation Studies at Barnard, brought scholars together from the U.S., Canada, and Europe.  Professors from translator training programs, translation studies programs, creative writing programs, and comparative literature programs discussed various pedagogical issues and compared notes on translation as it is taught in North America.  Professor Balcom participated in a panel discussion on translation in translator training programs.

Nonproliferation Beijing Immersive Module

Almost a dozen MIIS students participated in the Nonproliferation Beijing Immersive Module over spring break lead by Professor Jinhuei Enya Dai. Dr. Dai describes the Nonproliferation Beijing Immersive Module as “an innovative advanced Chinese language immersion program that provided networking opportunities focused on nonproliferation issues and international relations. Students were committed to [speaking] Chinese and interacting with professionals, scholars and graduate students in Beijing from various institutes of international relations and professional organizations focused on nonproliferation issues [from] 3/17/2012 to 3/25/2012… This rare opportunity offered a unique platform for MIIS young scholars to exchange professional ideas and to enhance their potential future collaborative working opportunities…”

The MIIS 2012 Beijing Delegation was invited by CACDA (China Arms Control and Disarmament Association) to conduct a week-long set of exchanges on nonproliferation issues and international relations between China and the U.S in Beijing, China. The delegation was comprised of 8 Chinese-speaking students studying nonproliferation, 1 international relations/MBA major, 2 teaching assistants and 1 instructor.

On March 19th, 2012, CACDA hosted a forum on Chinese nonproliferation issues. The experts at CACDA introduced China’s policy positions and practices on nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament.  They elaborated on the international nonproliferation situation and regional hot topics, and answered questions on issues such as the Iranian and North Korean nuclear issues, U.S.-Russian nuclear disarmament, and the India-Pakistan nuclear issues. This forum had a friendly and warm atmosphere, creating an interactive Q & A session. Both parties exchanged views on these issues and enhanced their understanding of China’s nuclear nonproliferation policies and nuclear disarmament standpoint. The forum was chaired by Secretary-General Li Hong. Vice-President Li Changhe and CIISS Research Fellow Mr. Hu Yumin also gave presentations on specialized issues.

During their time in Beijing, the MIIS 2012 Beijing delegation also visited the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), China Reform Forum, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, etc.

MIIS scholars who participated in the module reflected positively on the experience as a means of improving their Chinese language skills, their knowledge of Chinese perspectives on arms control issues, as well as a networking opportunity.

One senior research associate from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences commented on how impressed he was with the Chinese language proficiency of the participant. Such mastery of Chinese language on the part of US scholars will help strengthen US-China relations.

We commend the organizers of the Beijing Immersive Module, especially Dr. Dai!

Recent MATESOL Graduate Gets Published!

Badr Al Jahwari (MATESOL 2011) has marked a significant milestone in his academic career as he published his first book “Literary Translation in Oman: Issues and Perspectives”. The story of the book goes back to June 2010 when he chaired the organizing committee of the First Conference on Translating Omani Literature. Some of the papers were presented in English while others were presented in Arabic. This book not only collects the papers presented in that conference but also presents a translation of those papers, creating a mirror-image style of a book with one half being Arabic and the other English. He worked on this project with Professor Rahma Al Mahrooqi, former Director of the Language Center at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman.

Rosa Kavenoki Traveled to Russia During Spring Break

MIIS professor Rosa Kavenoki was a juror at a MOK conference at the Higher School of Interpretation and Translation of the St.Petersburg State Pedagogical (Herzen) University in St. Petersburg, Russia on March 24. The Higher School of Interpretation and Translation is sponsored by the UN and the European Commission, and has been training new interpreters for the Russian booths in both organization, as well as for the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Professor Kavenoki was present at the school’s inception four years ago and has visited twice a year since its inception. The translation and interpretation program at the Higher School is a year long and is considered the best in Russia.

While in Russia, Kavenoki met with MIIS Alumni Elena Kucherenko, Olga Myshenkova, Nikolay Zabelin, Dmitry Roumyantsev, Evgeny Soko, and Ksenia Ruzova.

The International Terminology Summer School (TSS 2012) will take place at the University of Vienna, from 9 to 13 July 2012, jointly organized by TermNet, the International Network for Terminology, and the Center for Translation Studies.
