Refugee Education Challenge is now accepting ideas to improve education opportunities for children in refugee camps.

“Now is the chance to share an idea you have for how to improve education for refugees. We’ve partnered with UNCHR and UNICEF – so even if you aren’t able implement your idea yourself, there’s an opportunity you to submit a winning idea that could be implemented through partnerships with organizations already working with UNICEF and UNHCR.

Winning ideas on our shortlist will attend a design support bootcamp hosted by IDEO.org designers, where participants will learn how to apply human-centered design to their challenge idea. A handful of these ideas will be selected to receive a share of $500,000 in funding and design support.”

OpenIDEO asks the question “How might we help women and girls feel safe and empowered in low-income urban areas?” In the 21 century, the concept of safety as a human right is still nothing women and girls can take for granted. Exposed to gender-based violence, social stigmatization and lack of access to basic health care and other social services, OpenIDEO is calling for action, and will launch a challenge in February.

This challenge will be the first of ten sponsored by the Amplify program, a partnership between the Department for International Development and IDEO.org. The program aims to transform international aid through collaboration and human-centered design. Click here for further information and how to keep informed on the upcoming challenge.

Submissions are invited for the Naval War College Award for Research on a topic related to women and conflict outcomes. The Naval War College is a professional military education institution that offers an M.A. degree in national security and strategic studies to military officers and civilians from national security agencies. The $10,000 award, sponsored by the Naval War College Foundation, is designed to encourage outstanding new research that advances understanding of the roles of women during conflict and in conflict prevention and conflict resolution.

The National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security, issued by the President in December 2011, states that “deadly conflicts can be more effectively avoided, and peace can be best forged and sustained, when women become equal partners in all aspects of peace-building and conflict prevention, when their lives are protected, their experiences considered, and their voices heard.” In today’s conflicts women are disproportionately victimized. Women are also emerging as agents for conflict resolution, bringing perspectives that may contribute to viable and lasting peace settlements.

This competition is intended to broaden the field of inquiry and stimulate scholarly research on questions related to the roles of women in modern conflict and the impact of women on conflict outcomes. The competition is open to scholars from all disciplines. Papers should be approximately 6,000 words long and suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Preference will be given to research-based papers with policy relevance. The contest is open to citizens of all countries but essays must be written in English.

The essays will be judged by a distinguished panel of scholars and practitioners: General James Mattis, USMC (ret.); Ambassador (ret.) Swanee Hunt; Dr. Kiron Skinner; and Ambassador (ret.)
