Why Meat?

We wanted to take a closer look at our food system. And we thought that the meat industry was a good avenue to explore, especially given the criticism it has received in recent years. So what’s up with meat in the U.S.?

We broke our research down into the ’causes’ and ‘consequences’ of our current system.

The ’cause’, it seems, is a number of powerful players who control most of the processes involved in meat production, combined with their ability to lobby government and sway policy.

Our ‘consequences’ posters (to come in the following months) focus on three areas:

  1. The environmental impacts of the industry
  2. The implications for workers’ rights, farmers’ rights, and animal rights
  3. The effects of high meat consumption on Americans’ health

For each poster, we have an associated blog post with a list of sources for all of our information.
