Different institutions have different ways of assisting first-year students with their transition to college. First-Year Experience programs vary in scope. Some common components of First-Year Experience Programs are outlined here:
Advising: As students transition to college, they often need guidance to understand policies and requirements, plan for their academic career, and choose a major. Advising support can be an excellent way to help students succeed during their first year.
Freshman Seminar: One common curricular element of first-year experience programs is the Freshman Seminar. These courses are typically taken in students’ first semester and prepares them to think critically, write academic papers, and make connections with faculty and peers outside their chosen or anticipated major.
Online First-Year Experience: Due to the COVID-19 health crisis, students starting college in Fall 2020 may have part or all of their first year online. This section describes best practices and considerations for delivering virtual first-year experience programming.
