Outdoor Experience Programs

One offering that some institutions offer is an outdoor experience program. These programs range from weekend trips to week-long excursions and often happen before orientation. These trips support student development outside the classroom and the institution itself.

Colby Outdoor Orientation Trips are required of all first-year students. Students can choose from a wide variety of activities appropriate for all levels. Options include whitewater rafting and backpacking, as well as civic engagement and local exploration. The trips are led by student mentors, who offer support on campus throughout the year.

Project Explore at Towson University outlines the goals of their pre-orientation trip, which are similar to goals of other programs:

  • Enhance orientation experience
  • Meet current students and alumni.
  • Establish relationships with other participants and student leaders
  • Increase self-awareness and self-confidence by stepping outside of your “comfort zone” and overcoming challenges.
  • Begin the practice of setting and achieving individual and group goals.
  • Establish habits to foster well-being by experiencing the benefits of spending time outdoors and being active.
  • Build decision making skills as you work within the group to form consensus on decisions.
