Quick Start Guide

New Addition – Sony – Sigma Art Lens

Our first big addition to the cage this summer is the Sony Sigma Art Lens Kit. This kit includes seven high-speed prime lenses that have earned a nice reputation over the last few years. Our kit includes the 14mm f/1.8, 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, 70mm f/2.8 Macro, 85mm f/1.4, and 135mm f/1.8. Each lens has a fast maximum aperture to help with low light levels and each produces a beautiful image. The 14mm is the widest lens that we offer and the 70mm is a macro lens to get that telephoto look in an extreme close-up while being able to get physically close to your subject.

These lenses are manufactured as a sony e-mount lens and will only be available for checkout with the Sony FS5 and FS7 cameras. They are an advanced lens kit and will be prioritized for upper level production courses.

If you’r interested in using these lenses for a project, keep your eye on the Workshop Calendar. The workshop will be paired with other advanced lenses in the equipment room and should take about 1.5-2 hours.

New Addition – ikan Gravity

Piggy backing off of our DJI Gimbal announcement, we are excited to announce another big addition to the cage – the ikan Gravity 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal System (GR-T03).  This gimbal can fly with the Sony FS100, Canon 5D, Sony PXW-X70, and even the Sony FS7 in the equipment room. This thing is such a beast that it can also support the FS7 with one of our new Sony CineAlta Lenses.

If you’re interested in flying the Gravity and using it for a project keep your eye on the Workshop Calendar. The workshop should take about 1.5 hours and will cover properly balancing the camera and basic operation techniques. Keep in mind that you must first be certified with the DJI Ronin to use the ikan Gravity gimbal system.

New Addition – Sony CineAlta Lens Kit

The next big addition to the cage is the Sony CineAlta 4K PL Lens Kit. This kit includes 20, 25, 35, 50, 85 and 135mm cine prime lenses. Each lens has a fast maximum aperture of T2, with a circular 9 blade iris. For our purposes, these lenses will only be available for checkout with the Sony FS7 camera, and for either independent projects or senior tutorial work.

If you’re interested in using these lenses for a project keep your eye on the Workshop Calendar. The workshop will be paired with the Sony FS7 workshop and should take about 1.5-2 hours.

Our first big addition to the cage this summer is the DJI Ronin MX Gimbal, suitable for the Sony FS100, Canon 5D, and Sony PXW-X70’s in the equipment room. Out of the box it supports two-operator operation, and includes a radio controller (transmitter) for the camera operator. An included universal mounting adapter allows it to be adapted for use with jibs and various other types of camera support equipment. There is also a handlebar for handheld use.

If you’re interested in flying the Ronin and using it for a project keep your eye on the Workshop Calendar. The workshop should take about 1.5 hours and will cover properly balancing the camera and basic operation techniques.

New Addition – Sony PXW-FS7 Camera

One of the biggest new additions to the equipment room this summer is the Sony PXW-FS7 4K XDCAM Super35 Camcorder with 28-135mm zoom lens. The 2x FS7’s will be available for senior thesis work and special projects throughout the year.

The FS7 supports simultaneous or relay recording of HD or UHD 4K (3840×2160) to integrated XQD media card slots. The included Sony 28-135mm power zoom lens covers the full frame format, and supports 4K resolution. The power zoom features a constant maximum aperture of f/4, so there is no exposure ramping as you zoom. It features separate geared focus, zoom, and iris rings for manual image control.

Come check out the new FS7’s when you get back on campus!

New Addition – Surround Sound Suite

The FMMC Surround Sound Audio Suite now includes a 5.1 surround sound speaker setup, as well as a wall mounted  48″ LCD TV. All accessories, including the mixer and Komplete Kontrol S61 keyboard are now fully functional.

Come stop by and check out the room when you get back on campus. And prepare for a great new space for audio editing, mixing, scoring, ADR, and interviews.

New Addition – Aesthetics Cameras

sony_x70

All students taking Aesthetics of the Moving Image this fall will have the privilege to try out our new fleet of handheld cameras – the Sony PXW-X70.

The Sony X70 is about the same size as a conventional 1/3″ professional compact camcorder, but it features a 1″ type sensor, which is larger than a super-16 sized sensor and more than eight times the size of a 1/3″ sensor. It features an integrated 12x optical zoom lens with a manual lens ring for zoom/focus control, and a three level switchable ND filter. The top handle incorporates two 3-pin XLR inputs for recording audio from XLR microphones.

Stop by and take a look at these new cameras. And stay tuned for more updates on equipment coming to the cage this fall.

New Addition – LED Kits

LED_Kit

Another new addition to the cage this summer is the iLED312-v2 3-Point Light Kit. This versatile kit comes with three LED’s that each have fully customizable dim (10%-100%) and color temperature (3,200k-5,600k) capabilities. No more need for bulb changes or gel swapping. And no more need for gloves – these things never get hot.

Four kits will be available to students that are taking, or have already taken, Sight and Sound I.

As we welcome in the new LED kits we say goodbye to four of our workhorse/burn inducing Lowel Tungsten light kits. Don’t worry, two Lowel kits will still be available for checkout.
