Gigantic DVDs

As you begin to get reacquainted with the axinn basement this semester you might notice a peculiar new addition in the Media Lab (Axinn 011). The boxes of oversized DVDs lined up against the wall are actually Laserdiscs that have been withdrawn from the Davis Library and catalog system. These Laserdiscs were purchased by the film department years ago and have been replaced by a more accessible and lighter medium, the DVD.

While we decide what to do ultimately with these Laserdiscs we would like to make them available to you in the form of an unofficial lending library. Why would you want to bother with Laserdiscs you might ask? Well, you may want to physically browse through the titles to look at cover art or to read the liner notes. You may want to experience the rush of flipping from Side A to Side B in the middle of a film. You may want to absorb some history and culture by watching a classic in a classic format. Or you may just be too lazy to walk over to the library to get the DVD version.

Anyway, the Laserdiscs are there and they are available immediately to borrow. Please return them when you are finished and please keep them in alphabetical order so as not to undermine the hard work of our summer intern, Tara Quinn. LaserDisc players are located in Axinn 001 and in Axinn 016. If you have any questions about how to set up these rooms for viewing don’t hesitate to ask me for help. Enjoy!
