Community Friends mentoring program for children ages 6-12

Community Friends is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches Middlebury College students with children ages 6-12 in Addison County.  The program was started in 1960 and is currently in its 61st year of operation. After getting matched with a student, mentees begin to meet regularly one-on-one with their mentor for about two hours each week. The mentor and mentee coordinate the timing of that meeting, based on mutual availability. 

In non-pandemic times, mentors and mentees often play games, construct crafts, and attend group events. This fall, mentoring will happen virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Parents, teachers, guidance counselors and other service providers can fill out the mentee referral form here to start the application process. Important Tax Information

As you prepare to file your 2016 income taxes, you may be asked about a form called Form 1095-C. The Affordable Care Act requires employers to furnish Form 1095-C to current and past employees who were covered in the employer sponsored medical plan for all or any portion of the tax year. In November of 2016, the IRS extended this year’s deadline for employers to furnish to employees the Form 1095-C from January 31st to March 2, 2017.

Please be aware that the extension to employers should not impact or delay a tax filer’s ability to file their income taxes as usual. Individual income tax-filers are not required to submit Form 1095-C when they file their taxes this year.  When the form does arrive (around March 2nd), be sure to keep the form with your personal tax records as documentation.

You may need to know the answers to a few basic questions when preparing your return:

  • Does Middlebury’s plan meet the minimum essential coverage criteria as mandated by the Affordable Care Act?   Yes it does.
  • Were you covered for all 12 months of the year? Each employee should know the answer to this.

Associate Chaplain Naila Baloch to give keynote address at Vermont Women in Higher Education Fall Dinner on October 11, 2016 at St. Michael’s College

naila1At the 2016 Fall Dinner hosted by Vermont Women in Higher Education (VWHE) on October 11, 2o16 at St. Michael’s College, Naila Baloch, Associate Chaplain and Muslim Advisor at Middlebury College’s Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life, will be the keynote speaker. Naila brings to her work a focus on building strong, inclusive communities, and in her role she facilitates Islamic and interfaith programming and retreats and also advises the Islamic Society of Middlebury College. Naila earned her bachelor’s degree from Williams College, where she studied astrophysics and comparative religion; her master’s in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School, where she specialized in Islamic ministry; and a graduate certificate from the University of Spiritual Healing and Sufism in Pope Valley, California, where her focus was on counseling from a spiritual perspective. She started her training at Harvard Divinity School as their first female, Muslim ministry student to prepare for positions of religious service. In 2015, Naila received the Carol A. Moore Scholarship from Vermont Women in Higher Education to continue her training in mental health counseling at the University of Massachusetts. Congratulations Naila!

Self Service Banner Demographic Info

To meet a number of mandatory federal reporting obligations, Human Resources is turning on two new survey pages in Self Service Banner (SSB).   These pages will offer you the opportunity to voluntarily provide your veterans and disability status.  Both surveys allow you to opt out if you do not wish to answer.  Once you have completed these surveys’ you will not be asked to complete them again.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Coffee and Water Contracts

The Green Mountain Higher Education Consortium (GMHEC) members Champlain College, Middlebury College, and Saint Michael’s College, are continuing efforts to obtain cost savings for the three institutions while adding benefits for all. Recently, GMHEC went through a request for proposal for coffee and condiments.  We received four proposals. After reviewing and vetting the proposals through a detailed process, we awarded the contract to W.B. Mason.  This is the same company which was awarded the GMHEC Office Supply contract last year.

The contract gives Middlebury at least 15% savings on coffee and up to 58% on condiments with a 2 year price guarantee.  For example, K-Cups cost only $10.24 per box and renting Keurig coffee machines (K140s and K150s) is free. Using W.B. Mason for both Office Supplies and Coffee/Condiments will simplify ordering for you and streamline the payment process for Accounts Payable.

To order coffee and condiments, please visit the W.B. Mason website. The pricing is reflected on the website. If you do not have a W.B. Mason account yet – please contact Matt Curran who will set you up with an account. Please refrain from ordering coffee and condiments (unless you order for dining) from other vendors such as Crystal Rock, Costco, Walmart, Amazon, etc.

To rent a coffee brewer, contact Jarrod Pulsifer, our W.B. Mason account executive, with information on which brewer you would like, the INDEX to charge it to, and the exact location where it will be (address, room number). It usually takes 3-5 business days to get the brewer installed.

For water coolers, the College is staying with Misty Meadows to support a small, local, family-owned business. If you need a plumbed-in water cooler, W.B. Mason is the vendor of choice though as Misty Meadows does not provide them (and your contact is Jarrod Pulsifer). For Misty Meadows contact information see the Purchasing website.

Please be mindful of the College’s policy that these types of items are only allowable with advance approval from your supervisor per the College’s handbook.
