Meet Mobility Print — A New Service for Personally-Owned Computers

Happy New Year!  ITS is pleased to announce a new printing method called Mobility Print which is now available through our Papercut printing service.  Mobility Print enables you to install print queues on your personally-owned computer through a one-time process, then print directly from your applications using File/Print thereafter.  Unlike with Web Print, you’ll be able to print in a variety of ways — specific pages, single- or double-sided, color or black and white — all without the need to upload your files.

Visit http://go/mobileprint/ for instructions on how to set up printers on macOS and Windows computers, then say “goodbye” to Web Print and its limitations.

Important notes:

  • Mobility Print is intended for single user computers.  On Windows computers, whoever added the printer will be charged, regardless of who is currently logged in.
  • Mobility Print is not intended for use on college-owned computers as these can already connect easily to networked printers.  Refer to http://go/print?win/ or http://go/print?mac/ for details.
  • ITS does not currently support Mobility Print from iOS, Android, Chrome OS, or Linux.

Important Info about Apple’s Latest OS Offerings

Apple recently released a new iOS version for use on iPads and iPhones, iOS 11. You may experience difficulty connecting to Middlebury College email hosted by Microsoft when using the native iOS Mail and Calendar Apps. ITS recommends you use Outlook for iOS available free in the App Store. Apple and Microsoft are working on a solution.

Apple also announced the next version of macOS, High Sierra, available 9/25/17. ITS has instituted a block on the installation of this OS on college managed computers until it can be tested with college systems and software. Our High Sierra webpage (http://go.middlebury.edu/highsierra) will provide updates as they become available, including notes about any known issues and resolutions.

Middlebury Campus Moves to Office 2016 — Are You There Yet?

MS Office 2016 logoIs your college-owned computer already running Microsoft Office 2016?  If so, you’re all set; read no further (unless you hate to miss anything!)

If you have yet to upgrade your version of Office, it’s time to seize the moment and take care of this important detail so you’ll be using the recommended version.  Office 2016 is available for college-owned computers through self-service installs that can be done at your convenience. You’ll find installation instructions — and some great resource links — on our Office 2016 wiki page.  If you’d like assistance or have questions about the Office upgrade process, please submit a Helpdesk ticket and we’ll be happy to lend a hand.

Reluctant to upgrade?  You may be relieved to hear that you won’t need to relearn everything you already know.  The main changes are a streamlined look that provides the same experience on different devices, such as phones and tablets, and better integration with OneDrive for file storage.  Office 2016 is also needed so you can use Multi-Factor Authentication with Outlook.

But don’t take my word for it — check out How to Learn More about Office 2016 and convince yourself that it’s time to move on up!

“Cloudiness” Made Clear (a.k.a. Making Sense of Midd’s Cloud Storage)

cloudsWhen you hear the words “cloud,” “sync,” and “local” all in one sentence do your eyes glaze over?  You are not alone.  Please take a look at our new handout (easily revisited using http://go.middlebury.edu/cloudpic) to help you understand Middlebury’s cloud storage and some key points about its use.

Pssst…  If you find our handout helpful, please don’t tell your friends about it — let them learn the hard way, eh?

New Cloud File Storage: Welcome to Your New “Home”!

cloudsMicrosoft’s OneDrive file storage system has just been turned on for all staff, faculty, and students on the Middlebury campus and at MIIS.  Now that our e-mail has successfully moved to the cloud, we turn next to Middfiles “home” folders.  Don’t panic!  You’re not in this alone — we’re here to help.  To take advantage of the many benefits of cloud storage, you’ll want to begin by moving the contents of your “home” folder from Middfiles to OneDrive.  (“Orgs” and “Classes” folders on Middfiles are staying put for now.)  If you are already using cloud storage through Google, you may certainly use this service instead.  Our goal is for all of you to complete the move of your Middfiles “home” folders to the cloud by the end of this year.

In the upcoming weeks ITS will be scheduling training for partners across the Midd community so we can work together to assist anyone who needs a hand with this exciting, new service.  We will also provide documentation, online tutorials, and workshops designed to get you moving your files quickly and easily, using methods that work best for you.  Watch your email for upcoming details.

Can’t wait to learn more – and perhaps give things a try?  Take a look at http://go.middlebury.edu/onedrivehelp.

Windows 10: What’s Happening?

win10

With Microsoft offering free Windows 10 upgrades to current owners of Windows 7 and 8, Information Technology Services (ITS) has received questions about this new operating system and our plans for the future.  ITS currently recommends that individuals do not install Windows 10 if they are prompted to do so on a college-owned machine.  Until thorough testing of Windows 10 functionality with College resources has been completed, ITS will continue to install and support Windows 7 on college-owned computers.  Windows 10 will be made available on campus computers later on, after any significant issues are resolved and important supporting documentation has been updated.

As we put Windows 10 through its paces, our observations, known issues, and training resources will be gathered for convenient access.  Visit http://go/win10 for the latest information.
