The Middlebury Performing Arts Series presents a holiday treat: a FREE streaming presentation of Manual Cinema’s A Christmas Carol!
Following up on their smash 2019 presentation at Middlebury, the interdisciplinary performance collective Manual Cinema takes on Charles Dickens’s holiday classic A Christmas Carol with a visually inventive adaptation made for the screen. In this version, avowed holiday skeptic Aunt Trudy has been recruited to channel her late husband Joe’s famous Christmas cheer. From the isolation of her studio apartment, she reconstructs his annual Christmas Carol puppet show—over a Zoom call while the family celebrates Christmas Eve under lockdown. But as Trudy becomes more absorbed in her own version of the story, the puppets take on a life of their own, and the family’s call transforms into a stunning cinematic adaptation of Dickens’s classic ghost story. This production draws on hundreds of paper puppets, miniatures, silhouettes, and an original score to create an imaginative reinvention of a cherished holiday tradition.

Free Performances are the Hallmark Sounds of Summer Life on Campus
The beautiful sounds of ringing bells will fill the air again this summer, as the 37th annual Middlebury College Carillon Series treats audiences to free performances in and around the Middlebury Chapel. Each year, musicians from around the world come to Middlebury to perform in the Chapel’s soaring tower, high above the College campus. The series is organized by George Matthew Jr., Middlebury College Carillonneur. All of the concerts are on Fridays and are free and open to the public–rain or shine–and can be enjoyed on the steps of the Chapel or on the surrounding lawns. Audiences are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

About Middlebury’s Carillon
A carillon is a musical instrument typically housed in the bell tower of a church or other municipal building. Its sound is produced by at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells, which are played serially to produce a melody, or sounded together to play a chord. The carillonneur plays by striking a keyboard with black and white keys and foot pedals that can help produce different kinds of sound. Each key is connected by wire to a bell clapper so different bells are rung depending on which key is struck.

This year, the Kevin P. Mahaney ’84 Center for the Arts celebrates its 25th anniversary with a diverse and exciting array of concerts, plays, exhibitions, dance performances, films, and more. As the busiest visual and performing arts facility in Addison County, the Mahaney Center serves as a hub of arts activity for both the College and the surrounding communities. We invite the campus and community to celebrate with us all season long. A highlight of the 2017–2018 season is a kickoff weekend with vertical dance company BANDALOOP, September 15–16.

On Saturday, March 1, the campus community is invited to two special events celebrating the dedication of the College’s new Steinway concert grand piano, given by the Rothrock Family in honor of Jessica and Ron Liebowitz. Many students, faculty, and staff have already taken an opportunity to get acquainted with this beautiful new instrument.
First, Joseph Polisi, president of the Juilliard School, will give a public lecture on “The Arts, Education, and the Human Experience” at 4:30 p.m. in the Mahaney Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Dr. Polisi is a leading college administrator; a writer in the fields of music, public policy, and the arts; and an accomplished bassoonist. Later that night, at 8:00 p.m., the Concert Hall will host a festive evening of classical and jazz piano performances by members of the Middlebury College community: Cameron Toh ’17, Shannia Fu ’17, David Heschel Liebowitz, Gwendolyn Toth ’77, Felix Klos ’14 with Dick Forman, and Nathaniel Rothrock ’12.5 with Jeff Buettner. The event will also include the screening of the new video “Selecting a Steinway” by Stephen Diehl and Matt Lennon ’13. A reception will follow the performances.
