NER Poetry Reading Group

Midd Points

The New England Review (NER) is hosting a poetry reading group for faculty and staff this fall. Join them to discuss US Poet Laureate Ada Limón’s book The Hurting Kind. Those who sign up will receive a copy of the book. The group will meet on three Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 pm in the CTLR Suite (Lib 225) on 9/29, 10/27, and 11/10. Come to one session or all three. You are welcome to bring your lunch. The CTLR will provide coffee/tea. To sign up or for questions email Leslie Sainz. Books will be available for pickup in the CTLR.

Thank you to the many Middlebury employees, from all areas of campus, who make the Summer Research Program possible. For over 40 years, students have spent the summer learning with faculty mentors through research projects, experiencing both their college and academic field in a new way.

Come say hello and grab a refreshment as the students speak about their projects at the Summer Research Symposium on Thursday, August 4 from 2-4 pm in the MBH Great Hall.

Spring Student Symposium

We invite all members of the Middlebury College community, guests, and members of the public to join us in celebrating the academic and creative endeavors of Middlebury students. The symposium on Friday, April 21 will feature oral and poster presentations and displays throughout the day in McCardell Bicentennial Hall. Student presenters come from all four classes at Middlebury and all fields of academic study.

Spring Student Symposium Update: Application Deadline 3/2

Faculty and Staff: Please encourage your students to apply. Encouragement from a faculty or staff member is the largest reason students chose to participate in the Spring Student Symposium! Students from all four years and all departments and programs are invited to apply.

The application deadline is Thursday, March 2, 2017. For more information and the online application, see the Undergraduate Research website at http://go.middlebury.edu/sym.

Research in a class, independently, or through an internship; the experience of producing a creative work; or another academic project that lends itself to a display, a poster or oral presentation, are all eligible for the symposium. Both individual and class presentations are welcome. Student’s applications must include a project description (200 words) that has been approved by a faculty or staff sponsor. Final abstract revisions are due 3/20.

The 2017 Spring Student Symposium will take place all day Friday, April 21 in McCardell Bicentennial Hall with presentations of student work across the disciplines.

More than 130 Middlebury students across the disciplines are engaged in faculty mentored research projects on campus this summer as research assistants. Join the symposium for our 10th year of celebrating the academic and creative endeavors of Middlebury students! The 2016 Spring Student Symposium will take place all day Friday, April 15, with presentations of student work across the disciplines in McCardell Bicentennial Hall. Students from all four years and all departments and programs are invited to participate.

Encourage or sponsor a student to apply to present their academic work! They are eligible if they have done research in a class, independently, or through an internship; if they would like to share the experience of producing a creative work; or if they have a project to present in a poster or oral format. The application deadline is March 4, 2016.

2016 Spring Student Symposium

Senior Work Funding Deadline is Oct. 1

For Faculty, For Staff

See the below deadlines for funding for seniors beginning senior work projects this year; or juniors looking to summer and fall 2016. If projects need funding beyond what the department can provide, they can apply for a Senior Research Project Supplement (SRPS). Depending on when the student is pursuing their work, there are three important deadlines to know:

• Application Deadline of October 1, 2015 and January 29, 2016 (new this year) for projects to be completed this academic year (seniors only)

• Application Deadline of April 15, 2016 for projects to be completed next academic year (senior febs and juniors)

• Funding requests for $350 or less may be submitted throughout the academic year until funds run out (seniors only)

See the Undergraduate Research website go/srps for an application, more detailed information and eligible expenses.

In addition, students needing support to attend or present at an academic conference may apply for academic travel funding at go/atf.

Professional Development Workshops Presented by John Tallmadge

Join us for professional development workshops presented by John Tallmadge, an educational and literary consultant (who is the author of Meeting the Tree of Life: A Teacher’s Path), on Friday, March 6th, in the CTLR Suite in the Davis Family Library. The three workshops on Friday are:

12:15-1:20 pm Workshop 1 – Staying Alive in the Beginning and Warrior Phases of a Career (for junior and term faculty) – This workshop is primarily for junior faculty as well as to those not on the tenure track and deals with the challenges of leading a balanced life during the beginning and warrior phases of one’s career. Lunch included.

1:30-2:30 pm Workshop 2 – Academic Publishing: from leveraging the dissertation to rendering mature work into articles and books (for all ranks) – This workshop, designed for both junior and senior faculty, deals with the nuts and bolts of academic publishing, both for those just getting started and for those whose experience may feel a bit out of date; it covers journals (print and online) as well as books.

2:45-3:45 pm Workshop 3 – Staying Vital in the Citizen and Later Phases of a Career: leadership, mentoring, and retirement (for senior faculty) – This workshop engages senior faculty in the citizen and later phases of their careers, when leadership calls and retirement looms (or beckons) and the challenges of leading a balanced, healthy life can feel particularly acute.

Projects are presented in a poster/display or oral format, encourage students to apply to present their academic work! The 2015 Spring Student Symposium will begin in the Mahaney Center for the Arts on Thursday night, April 9 with a keynote talk by Kevin Murungi ’01, the Director of Human Rights and Foreign Policy at Global Kids, followed by a reception and student presentations. The Symposium continues all day Friday, April 10 with presentations of student work in McCardell Bicentennial Hall.
