What’s a fast, effective way to publicize your event to a diverse body of students? Table tents!

Table tents are the 5×7″ posters that sit on the tables in the dining halls. Middlebury College departments, centers, students organizations, etc can reserve the table tents for one week (Friday to Friday). The Office of Sustainability Integration manages the table tent reservations. Visit go/tabletent for more information.

Coming in January 2015 – A new process for table tents:

Step 1. Reserve the table tents

• Email your reservation request with preferred dates to Kris Smith: kksmith@middlebury.edu
• Table tents are put in on Friday afternoons and taken out on Friday mornings (we try to keep the switch to Fridays to make it simpler for Dining Services)

Step 2. Design your table tent announcement

• Dimensions: 5in wide x 7in tall
• Print the same announcement on both sides of paper.
• All table tents must include the phrase “Printed on 100% recycled paper.”
• Request your table tents to be printed on 100% recycled paper.

Step 3. Have your announcement approved.

• Send a draft of your announcement to kksmith@middlebury.edu

Step 4. Print 130 copies of your table tent announcements.

• Use heavy weight paper to prevent bleeding through to the other side

Step 5. Drop off your table tents at the Office of Sustainability Integration in the Franklin Environmental Center at Hillcrest (Room 109) by 9am on the first day of your reservation.

• You will receive a reminder email from Kristin Smith about your reservation
• Bring your table tents to the Office of Sustainability Integration by 9:00 a.m. on the first day of your reservation (feel free to bring table tents a day or two earlier).
• A student worker will put up and take down your table tents in all three dining halls.
• If you want to receive your table tent back after the reservation, please let us know in advance. Otherwise, we will recycle them for you.

The Campus as an Energy Island: Exploring the Microgrid Option

On Wednesday, November 12 the College will host a panel to discuss the feasibility and costs/benefits of creating a Middlebury College microgrid as a way for its electrical system to become more resilient to future extreme climate events.

In recent years, rapid changes in energy technology have opened the door for localized power distribution, creating the opportunity for a fundamental shift in our society’s system of electricity production and transmission. In planning for the impacts of climate change, there is a pressing need for both increased grid resilience and the integration of renewable power sources, both of which can be addressed by widespread integration of microgrids.

As an institution with electrical needs and existing infrastructure and capital, Middlebury is ideally sized and suited to help pioneer this important technology. The challenge moving forward is in developing sophisticated control systems that will allow for maximum safety and efficiency, while also maximizing cost-saving potential. The panel will discuss the recent upsurge in microgrids across the country, the technology shifts that have enabled it, and the benefits of grid-organized distributed electricity generation in Vermont.

This year’s MCAB fall symposium, hosted by EatReal, focuses on food justice and injustice on local, national, and international scales. Highlighting the social and political implications of food production and consumption, we will also explore how class, gender, and race are intrinsically linked to our present food system. Numerous lectures and workshops will help us to critically examine how policy and activism can address food security and access, creating a more socially just food system for all. Eric Holt-Giménez. Food Regimes and Food Movements: Time for Transformation

This talk by Eric Holt-Giménez is part of the Food [in]Justice in the 21st Century Symposium, co-hosted by student group EatReal and MCAB, that will focus on access to sustainable and healthy food at a local, national, and global level.  Holt-Giménez is Executive Director of Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy, a “peoples’ think-and-do tank” dedicated to eliminating the injustices that cause hunger and environmental degradation. Previously, he worked as Latin American Program Manager at the Bank Information Center in Washington, DC, where he monitored the projects and policies of the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Breeze Harper discusses her new book project that focuses on critical race and black feminist perspective on black male vegan activists using hip hop methodologies to teach about veganism and other intersectional issues such as decolonizing the diet, being ‘race-conscious’, and using gardening to combat the prison to pipeline phenomenon.

3.  The College reimburses rides on CCTA and ACTR commuter buses at NO expense to staff and faculty

NOTE: This is a staff and faculty benefit only. While students ride the Middlebury ACTR buses for free, they pay for the commuter buses.
