After almost twenty-eight years working at the Middlebury College Museum of Art, Emmie Donadio will retire at the beginning of February. During these years she has worn many hats including assistant director, associate director, chief curator, curator of modern and contemporary art and director of programs and events. She has played an instrumental role in many of the exhibits organized during these years and actively contributed to the growth in the museum’s permanent collection. Among her many activities she has overseen student interns, taught Winter Term courses, written and edited exhibit catalogues, given public talks and for the past two years served as co-director of the summer internship program MuseumWorks.
Hers has been a long and distinguished career in service to Middlebury and numerous colleagues have had thoughts and recollections:
Emmie and I often approached an exhibit from very different viewpoints but we always challenged each other and the results were some of our most compelling exhibits—After Eden, 13 Alumni Artists, Confronting History—to name a few. Wow, I miss her already.
Emmie is lively and smart and funny, and she has the courage to speak her mind.

Emmie is an institutional memory in her own right! She has a lovely rapport with the faculty, staff, and the public, and will be missed.
I have had the pleasure to work with Emmie on exhibitions, acquisitions, installations, object labels, publications, and most recently the forthcoming handbook of the collection. She also introduced me to many prominent artists and several important scholars, and for all that I am extremely grateful. I will miss the many conversations about the arts we engaged in within the confines of the museum, but I look forward to many more conversations about the arts at Middlebury in more general contexts, at concerts, lectures, and many museum events.
Emmie’s career at Middlebury will be celebrated with a retirement party on Tuesday, January 30 at 4:30 in the lower lobby of the Mahaney Center for the Arts.
