October EFAP News: Basic Dental Care

When was the last time you went to the dentist? Do you have a regular dental routine?

Good dental habits are something that adults enforce in children, but tend to let fall by the wayside for themselves. Maintaining dental hygiene is incredibly important to maintaining good dental health. It prevents issues like bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay which can lead to serious issues and cost long term. Good dental hygiene is also really simple.

A good basic dental routine consists of the following:

Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using a mouthwash.

Why do all this? Most of it comes down to preventing the growth of bacteria know as plaque in the mouth to levels that can be harmful causing bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay. This is because plaque generates acid, which can wear away at teeth, and irritate gums leading to gum disease. In the long run this damage will turn in to tooth decay, which is painful, unsightly, and costly to address.

Regular visits to the dentist are also key to maintaining good dental health with the main goal being prevention. Visiting a dentist regularly will not only result in a thorough cleaning, but also give an opportunity to work with the dentist to develop the best home routine for dental care, and to address more minor dental issues before they turn into major, and emergent ones. Visiting the dentist is also relatively easy, most insurance plans cover 2 visits per year for a cleaning and checkup.

Like many health considerations, tooth and gum care is about establishing and keeping good habits. Be true to your teeth or someday they may be false to you!

Healthy Aging

There is a new saying that “60 is the new 40.” The way our society looks at age is changing, reflecting longer life spans and conditions never experienced before. The manner in which we relate and interact with our surroundings makes a huge difference in our individual perception of the aging experience. In this class, we will discuss age as a state of mind and in relation to our surroundings.
