March EFAP News: Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse and Opioids are Devastating America

Drug use continues to be on the rise in America with over 23.5 million Americans addicted to alcohol and other drugs.  That is approximately one in every 10 Americans over the age of 12 – roughly equal to the entire population of Texas.

According to the SAMSHA’s Survey in 2016 on Drug Use and Health, 11 million Americans misused prescription opioids and nearly 1 million used heroin, with 2.1 million Americans addicted to both.  Deaths from opiate painkillers outnumber deaths from all other illicit drugs combined.

With statistics like that it is easy to see how nearly everyone knows someone or has someone in their family with an alcohol or drug problem.

Substance abuse has a cumulative impact on not only that individual, but their family, their community, and on our society as a whole.

Getting help for addiction can be challenging – it is a complex problem that requires specialized care and while there is a treatment out there for everyone you must be very committed to recovering to succeed.  Families and loved ones of substance abusers also often need support and help which is why there are specialized programs for them as well.

We can save our families, communities and country by getting help and recovery for ourselves and family members who have been hijacked by this powerful disease. If you or a loved one is affected by substance abuse, call the EAP and let us help find resources for treatment and support.

This month be sure to register and attend the webinar, “Substance Abuse and Your Loved Ones.” Learn more about substance abuse, how it affects individuals, and those close to them. A full description and registration information is listed in the sidebar to the right. If you’re unable to attend at any of the times, log on to the website at a later time to view the archived presentation.
