Assignment #5
I will provide a short step outline of the above scene from Wolfgang Petersen’s 1984 fantasy epic The Neverending Story.
1. ATREYU faces the two glowing sphinxes that prevent him from continuing his journey to save Fantasia. He fingers his AURYN talisman for strength.
2. As he walks forward on the path, ATREYU spots a fallen warrior dressed in armor surrounded by scattered bones.
3. ATREYU wavers, doubting himself, and in the distance ENGYWOOK yells, insisting that he must be confident. BASTIAN also yells, from the real world into the fantasy world, “be confident.”
4. The sphinxes eyes begin to glow and then fire lasers. ATREYU sprints forward, narrowly dodging them, and falls flat on his stomach, safely past the sphinxes.
5. ENGYWOOK descends from his observation tower and ecstatically celebrates ATREYU’s success.
