Ian Parker and the Poverty Lab

This a paragraph from a summary about Ian Parker profile:

Duflo and her colleagues in the poverty action lab (J-Pal) have helped poor people in India and Africa through many experiments. For example, which ideology could be more effective to protect the Kenyans from malaria, free bed nets or cheap ones? The experiment was useful in deciding the best development method because some argue that humans tend to value things that they pay for more than the free items. In Kenya, however, the free bed net works better. Moreover, Duflo with her colleagues has written a paper about “The Miracle of Microfinance?” where she agrees that micro-financing may not improve education, health conditions or gender equality, but it is “a credit” in the poor’s hands that can help to solve some problems. However, she is convinced that a steady job is the solution to live an easy life, and a job is exactly what the poor need.

Simplicity and Clutter works:

Hanadi,

I was attracted by the topic of this paragraph because I have already read about it some time ago and I wanted to know why some people are not making use of these nets. Anyways, I would like to suggest that you make some changes regarding the order of some phrases and the shape of the key words of the sentences. As we discussed and read in “shape” and “action”, it is better to make sentences clearer by fronting some words or changing their form. For example, in the first sentence, it is better to link the verb “have helped” directly to the subject “Duflo and her colleagues”. You may put “in the poverty action lab” at the end of the sentence. The same thing can be done in the sentence in line 6. I suggest that you put ‘ in that particular country” at the very end of the sentence. A final comment would be on the last sentence. You may change the last part into ” and what the poor need is a job”

Best
