I just finished reading Professor Mittell’s piece on wikis. It talked about how Wikipedia is so successful because it is totally free and doesn’t advertise. It allows anyone with an internet connection access to it. This made me think about what would happen if Social Network Sites like Facebook or Twitter charged money for access. Would we see a rapid decline in usage. Considering how dependent our society seems on social media, I sincerely doubt that there would be that great of a decline in usage. People would be willing to fork over a subscription fee (say $10/year) to use Facebook. Many would try to not use it and fail. I know I certainly would. How do you think you would react if Facebook started charging a subscription fee?
