Why is the “disability belt” located in Appalachia? Are people more disabled in Appalachia, or are they “welfare cheats”? If disability is higher in this region, what are some possible explanations? In this section we explore some of the reasons behind the Disability Belt in Appalachia. Two notable contributors to the high rates of receiving Social Security Disability are the opioid crisis and the coal industry.
