Speaker Series- Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories on Cyber Issues – 11 Nov 2014

11 November 2014: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) representatives Matthew Myrick, John Donaldson and Jim Klopchic presented on “A Glimpse into the World of Cyber Security at LLNL”. For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place. LLNL’s mission is broader than stockpile stewardship, as dangers ranging from nuclear proliferation and terrorism to energy shortages and climate change threaten national security and global stabilit. Their session served as an introduction into the types of cyber incidents that LLNL endures on a regular basis. Additionally, there was discussion on their defense strategies, methodologies and future work projects.

Speaker Series- John Crain: 28 Oct 2014

 

28 October 2014: John Crain, Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) discussed, “Governing the Internet: How Does Governance Change in the Information Age.” This timely topic is being debated around the world by multiple states and international organizations. Questions related to security versus freedom of information are among the many facets of this global discussion.

Speaker Series: Dr. Linton Wells II – 12 Sept 2014

12 September 2014: Dr. Linton Wells II, MIIS CySec Distinguished Senior Research Fellow and Visiting Distinguished Research Fellow – Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) at National Defense University, former acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration (ASD NII) and U.S. Department of Defense Chief Information Officer (CIO), presented on “Humanitarian Aspects of Cyber 2.0: How Information, Communications and Technology Impact Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Relief (HA/DR).”

Speaker Series- NCTC: 24 April 2014

24 April 2014: The MIIS Terrorism Studies Club and MIIS Cyber Security Working Group hosted representatives from the Directorate of Strategic Operational Planning at the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC). They discussed their Net Assessment capability, which seeks to determine the character of the competition between the United States and non-state actors as well as identify areas of competitive advantage and asymmetries for senior policymakers.

Speaker Series- Mr. Donovan McKendrick: 11 April 2014

11 April 2014: Mr. Donovan McKendrick, Lead Cyber Analyst for the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC), provided a guest lecture entitled, “Cyber Threats and Information Sharing as a Force Multiplier.” His presentation focused on the mission of fusion centers in cyber security and provided an assessment of major cyber threats.

Speaker Series – Atif Mushtaq: 3 Feb 2014

3 February 2014: Atif Mushtaq, Senior Scientist and Malware Researcher for FireEye, presented on “Taking Down the World’s Largest Botnets”. Mr. Mushtaq explained his personal experiences in encountering and mitigating large-scale botnets, hackers, threat groups and cybercrime on behalf of FireEye. Following Mr. Mushtaq’s presentation, FireEye conducted informal university recruiting with all participating students. FireEye advertised several of their student internship positions available through their Ingnite college recruitment program.

Speaker Series – David Aucsmith: 28 Jan 2014

28 January 2014: David Aucsmith, Senior Director of Microsoft’s Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments, presented on “Cyber Security and Beyond.” In addition to providing a thorough evolution of the internet, technological devices and cyber threats, he focused on the complicated relationship between the government and private sector in identifying and managing the cyber threats from state and non-state actors that exist today. Mr. Aucsmith concluded by demonstrating the multitude of ways the private sector is able to assist government entities in managing this phenomenon.

Speaker Series – RIA: 9 December 2013

9 December 2013: Estonia has been at the forefront of developing cyber norms, creating e-governance, managing cyber crime, managing interoperability among agencies, exploring how technology is used efficiently by societies and how it is impacted by development issues. It is truly E-stonia. MCySec was very pleased to host Director General of the Estonian Information Systems Authority (RIA) which in charge of all cyber issues for Estonia, including their Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). Their model is frequently cited and emulated by multiple countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Mr. Priisalu is also Head of the Estonian Cyber Defense League (Küber-Kaitseliit) with whom the first EUCOM-funded, military-to-military cyber network operation familiarization exercise occurred in 2009. His presentation on “Cyber Security: An Estonian Perspective” to students, faculty and staff from the Monterey Institute and Naval Post Graduate school was very well received. He was bestowed the Order of Thor by the Military Cyber Professionals Association for his efforts that have benefited U.S. cyber security by MIIS President Sunder Ramaswamy. Mr. Priisalu was joined by two members of his team at RIA: Mr. Luukas Ilves Head of International Relations and Mr. Toomas Vaks, Head of Cyber Security. This event was closed to the public.
