Beyond Mis-education: Discussing Race in College Classrooms

Monday, January 15, CTLR, 11:00-1:00, lunch included

Presenter:  Prof. Tara Affolter, Assistant Professor of Education Studies, Middlebury College

Monday, January 15, CTLR, 11:00-12:15, followed by lunch

In this interactive workshop, Professor Tara Affolter will share some of her own research on classroom discussions regarding race, racism, and racial identity at historically white liberal arts colleges like Middlebury. The first half of the workshop will ask participants to engage their own understandings and teachings around race, racism and racial identity, as a key part of how we teach in relationship to these topics. During the second half of the workshop Professor Affolter will share her some of her findings and offer some suggestions about how to build inclusive anti-racist classroom communities.

Participants are asked to view Chimamanda Adichie’s TED talk, “The Danger of a Single Story” and read James Baldwin’s (1963) essay “A Talk to Teachers” prior to the workshop.
