Grading, Expectations, and Course Components

A significant amount of the scheduled course time will be devoted to in-class laboratory work. Students will also have independent “open” laboratory exercises, to be submitted as weekly homework assignments.

During the final five weeks of the semester, each student will complete an independent project, which will include designing and programming a computer simulation and a laboratory experiment making use of that simulation.

Other General Information

  • There is no required textbook.
  • There will be regular readings from the NetLogo users manual, which can be read on-line at ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/docs/.  It can also be downloaded PDF format to your personal computers from this website (which is highly recommended), as can the NetLogo software (which is equally highly recommended, though it is also available in the lab).
  • There will also be  occasional readings from various other sources including readings on reserve and  on-line sources.
  • For corresponding homework assignments, see the assignments page.

Summary

The course will have:

►Regular (usually weekly) homework assignments, usually with a programming component, sometimes written, or a combination of both;
►One major term programming project, which will be a modeling & simulation independent project  in NetLogo.
►One 2-hour evening midterm, approximately the middle of the semester;  and
►A final exam.

Policy on Late Homeworks.

  • Homeworks are due at the start of class, unless otherwise specified.
  • Late homeworks (up to the start of the next class) will be penalized 30%.
  • Homeworks will not be accepted more than one class period late.
  • Extensions may be granted for good reasons, but should be requested a day or more in advance.

Student grades will be based on these components, weighted as follows:

  • 40% — weekly homework assignments
  • 25% — term project
  • 10% — mid-term exam
  • 25% — final exam
