This class has been a wonderful reminder that reading is so crucial to writing. I was constantly inspired by the readings that were assigned each week, but also by the work of you all. If I felt stuck, I knew that reading would give me inspiration or at least a bit of joy. I hope that because of this class I not only continue writing, but reading more than I was before.
Every time I take a class at Middlebury I am repeatedly in awe/admire the incredible talent that surrounds me at this institution. Thank you all for keeping me accountable in my own writing by constantly setting the bar so high. I have no doubt that this class will leave a lasting impact on my creative writing moving forward.
This class was a great place to be creative with guidance for me. Doing creative work is one of my favorite things to do and this class was a cool platform to explore and have have specific guidelines for that work. I made a lot of things that I know I will enjoy coming back to in the future.
The revision process was most interesting. I revised the most in nonfiction, but I bet it could’ve taken a few more edits. I really felt like the editing process is everlasting with that one, even though it ended. With fiction less editing was done, but I felt the feedback I received was most useful then. I got a sense of how people interpreted it and they helped me mold the story so people could really get it. In the poetry section I really wasn’t feeling the feedback I received. I think this comes back to the “objective right” that I talked about in the “Why I Write” assignment. I really felt like it was right the way it was, and the rhythm of it came to me so easily but I couldn’t understand how other people couldn’t catch on. I came to the conclusion that at the end of the day I write for myself. Art is really personal and it has to make the artist feel before it can let whoever is experiencing it feel.
I just want to say thank you to everyone! It was so inspiring to read everyone’s work over the semester and to see how everyone has their own unique writing style. I feel like I’ve gotten to personally know each of you through your writing. I really hope we can all stay in touch and continue to support each other as writers.
