Butchie’s Team Info Session
TONIGHT, Monday, Oct. 7, 8:00 p.m.
118 South Main Street, Conference Room

Come learn about a tradition that has continued at Middlebury for more than 50 years—a very special friendship between a local man and Middlebury College students. Butch is confined to a wheel chair due to cerebral palsy and is one of Middlebury’s athletic teams’ most enthusiastic and dedicated fan! For example, the men’s basketball team brings Butch to football games and the football team brings him to basketball games—and over the years a number of students have taken Butch for walks, brought him on-campus, and so much more. Come see a brief Emmy-award winning video capturing the friendship and tradition! Questions? Contact Kirra Simonson, ksimonson@middlebury.edu.

Middlebury Alternative Break (MAlt) Service Trip for October Break 2013!
Merck Forest & Farmland Center and Mountain Lake Services

Applications due September 30th
Join us for the sixth annual October MAlt break trips!

Mountain Lake Services, in Port Henry, New York, is an inclusive community with a wide range of services for those with developmental disabilities. In addition to learning about the comprehensive services offered by this organization,  participants will gain hands-on experience building new facilities for community members, assisting with job training, and working with the young children at their special needs school.  Participants will be staying off-site, allowing for reflection and discussion.  The leaders hope trip members will gain a new awareness of stigmas surrounding individuals with disabilities and the confidence to engage in conversations that will alleviate these stigmas in the Middlebury community and beyond.

Merck Forest & Farmland Center in Rupert, VT at the height of the foliage season is a testament to Vermont’s natural beauty. Merck Forest’s mission is to teach and demonstrate the benefits of innovative, sustainable management of forest and farmland. Our work will likely include trail maintenance in the forest and helping with the harvest. Participants will be camping (sleeping in a cabin) and cooking together as a group in fall temperatures ranging from 40-60 degrees during the day and 30-50 degrees at night. It’s about a two-mile hike into the site.

Both trips will depart on Saturday, October 18th and return on Monday, October 21st.

Trip Cost per person: $30. This trip is subsidized through the Middlebury Alternative Break Trips program.
Questions? Contact Ashley Calkins, Associate Director, Community Engagement, jcalkins@middlebury.edu.

Register today for Relay for Life!
The 10th annual Middlebury College Relay for Life is coming up this year on April 26th-27th. Picture yourself walking around a track, surrounded by hundreds of family and friends, encouraging each other to make another lap as you celebrate those who’ve fought cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has taken too much from too many. All of us have been touched by cancer, all of us should be there on April 26th. The money raised through Relay For Life events support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving work, like Hope Lodge facilities, which offer cancer patients a free place to stay, comfort, and support when they have to travel far from home for treatment. Too many people, including possibly someone you or I know, will be diagnosed with cancer this year. A Relay For Life event is our opportunity to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. Register your team NOW online here.

Leader Applications Open: Middlebury Alternative Break Trips (MAlt) February Break 2014 service-learning trips!

Posted by: | April 5, 2013 Comments Off on Leader Applications Open: Middlebury Alternative Break Trips (MAlt) February Break 2014 service-learning trips! |

MAlt is Middlebury’s alternative break program. In 2013-2014 MAlt will offer three domestic and two international student-led service trips over February break.

What Are the Responsibilities of a Middlebury Alternative Break Trip Leader?
MAlt trip leaders are responsible for trip logistics, group dynamics, education, and reflection before, during, and after the break.  Logistical responsibilities include helping to recruit and select participants, choosing appropriate worksites for the trip’s theme, initiating and maintaining ongoing contact with worksite coordinators to ensure rewarding service work for both participants and the community partner, drafting and maintaining a budget, creating a daily itinerary, arranging travel plans (e.g., plane reservations, car rentals, College van reservations, accommodations, etc.), and planning meals. Trip leaders work closely with MAlt tri-chairs and the MAlt advisor (Ashley Calkins in the Center for Education in Action, EIA).  Trip leaders are also responsible for coordinating group fundraising efforts and ensuring that fundraising goals (which may be substantial) are met.  Please Note: Leading a MAlt trip is a rewarding but demanding opportunity. You should expect to devote a significant amount of time to your trip pre-departure, including some level of research and planning during the summer.

Information Session: If you have a great idea for a trip or are interested in creating one, attend the MAlt leader info session on April 11th, 7pm in BiHall 219.

Application Information: Complete this application with a co-leader and e-mail it to middalt@middlebury.edu, by Wednesday, April 24th. MAlt trips can be domestic or international, but this year we will also be looking for strong applications in the New England region. This past year MAlt traveled to El Paso, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, New York City, and Tennessee.

Here’s how some MAlters described their trips in one word: community, warmth, eye-opening, growth, intense, challenging, humbling, real, soulful, marvelous, robust, refreshing, fantastic, and unforgettable.

Questions? Visit go/malt or contact co-chairs Charlotte Zelle and Maya Neria at middalt@middlebury.edu.
