In the beginning of the film we see her receive a love letter from Sanat. This is where the movie get’s its title from. The title describes hills or mountains that are surrounded at the top by clouds. This alludes to the ending of the film, where Neeta ends up on the top of the hill, but in a sanitarium.
We start the film with happiness, hopefulness, and an image of her smiling in front of the gate in the her bedroom. This contrasts with the end of the film, where things have gone terrible downhill and we get the feeling that she is stuck inside the prison, dying of tuberculosis. (KJ)
