Democracy in Action: Attend Middlebury Town Meeting tonight

On Town Meeting Day citizens across Vermont come together in their communities to discuss the business of their towns. For over 200 years Town Meeting Day has been an important political event as Vermonters elect local officers and vote on budgets. It has also been a time for neighbors to discuss the civic issues of their community, state, and nation.

Here’s your chance to volunteer with Farm-to-School programs or community cooking classes…or both!
NOM (Nutrition Outreach and Mentoring) is looking for volunteers on Tuesday 3/6 to work with students of all grade levels at Beeman Elementary in New Haven, in their morning or afternoon classes, to create a menu for cafeteria meals and help with other nutrition-related projects. Can’t make it Tuesday? On Wednesday 3/7 at 4:30, NOM will be cooking dinner with teens at the Addison Central Teen Center in town. Betasab: Seeking Assistant to the Executive Director
Volunteer needed 3 – 6 hours per week, starting immediately
Betasab, Inc. is a newly licensed non-profit. We are opening group homes for orphaned and vulnerable children in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and are dedicated to sustainable community development in Ethiopia. Started by Claudia Cooper, a Middlebury professor, we are looking for a self-sufficient student volunteer to assist in running the program. On-going volunteer work, and subsequent internships and/or work opportunities locally and in Ethiopia possible. Tasks will include: Development work—Identifying and contacting potential donors, assisting with grant research and applications, planning a fundraiser (use your imagination), assisting with web based marketing and website management. Program work –assisting with program development (including developing curricula for the children and income generating development projects for the community), and refining the Betasab Volunteer Program. Compañeros/ESL Program: Our oldest and most established volunteer option, the ‘Compañeros’ program is an opportunity to become more integrated and involved in the lives of the migrant community in Addison County as student pairs are matched with a local migrant farm workers to not simply to teach basic English skills but to develop a strong relationship and provide support through the Spanish language.
Community Outreach Events: A more flexible volunteer position, this opportunity allows for Spanish-speaking students to cater to the needs of the migrant community on a case-by-case basis often providing translation services, tutoring a child in English, and engaging with workers and their families at the Spanish masses and community events organized by Juntos.
Vecinos: This program partners Middlebury students with migrant families or children in Addison County. The students work primarily with the mothers and their children each week on the needs of that particular family, reading with the children in English and Spanish, and serving as mentors.

Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Trip: Application deadline 2/24
Habitat Spring Break 2012 Application
10 Middlebury students will build with Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity in North Carolina over spring break. We will be leaving Friday, March 23rd, and traveling by one 15-passenger College van to Maryland, where we will spend the night at a Middlebury family home. On Saturday the 24th, we will drive to Asheville. During each workday (Monday-Friday) we will spend about 8 hours working on Habitat homes in the Asheville area, doing everything from constructing walls to painting. In the evenings, we hang out, play games, watch movies, cook dinner for ourselves, and have outings in the beautiful Asheville area! We drive back to Maryland on Friday, March 30th, spend the night again, and return to Middlebury on Saturday, March 31st.Fill out the attached application and drop it off in Rm. 210 of the Center for Education in Action, Adirondack House. Charter House Homeless Shelter Training Session

Do you like working with children, Kindergarten through grade 6?
If you answer “yes” to both questions, then you are a perfect candidate to volunteer for the World Language Program at the Monkton Central School. Monkton Central School, a K-6 elementary school in rural Vermont (located about 18 miles north of Middlebury) , is part of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union. Since 2002, there has been a successful program at Monkton Central School in which Middlebury College students volunteer to teach a foreign language and culture 6 times, once a week, for 50 minutes. The program is a valuable complement to the academic curriculum , and is strongly supported by the PTO, the school principal and the teachers…and is thoroughly enjoyed by Middlebury and Monkton students.

If you said yes to one or more of these, then NOM’s new farm-to-school program will be just the opportunity for you! NOM (Nutrition Outreach and Mentoring) will begin its farm-to-school efforts on Tuesday, February 14th (Valentine’s Day!) from 11:30-12:00 and/or 12:00-12:30 at Beeman Elementary. Volunteers will be helping with “taste tests” during lunch period, to introduce kids to foods that they perhaps have never tried before. Transportation will be provided. College Defensive Driving Class [Required to drive campus vehicles!]
This program is required for anyone who wishes to rent a College passenger or 15-passenger vehicle. If you might want to use a campus vehicle for volunteering this semester, plan to take the last September defensive driving class! There is no cost for the class but a driving orientation (a 1 hour review on the road) is required for 15-passenger Vans and larger vehicles. Class time is about 2 Hrs. REMINDER: A valid state license is required to take the class. Individuals wanting a 15-Passenger Van license must have 3 years of driving experience. Charter House Homeless Shelter Training Session
Thursday, January 12th 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
The Charter House homeless shelter provides shelter for the homeless in Middlebury and is completely staffed by volunteers. Volunteers are needed around the clock, for shifts of 2 to 4 hours. Town Hall Theater in downtown Middlebury is looking for someone to design and maintain a social media strategy that will promote events at the theater. Middlebury vs. Plattsburgh Men’s Ice Hockey Game, 1/13: Want to go?
If you are planning on watching Middlebury take on Plattsburgh the first Friday of J-Term, consider doing so with CFES! CFES (College for Every Student) is looking for volunteers to have small group discussion before the game with Plattsburgh High School students about the benefit of extracurricular activities in high school and college. 1/11 College Defensive Driving Class [Required to drive campus vehicles!]
This program is required for anyone who wishes to rent a College passenger or 15-passenger vehicle. If you might want to use a campus vehicle for volunteering this semester, plan to take this defensive driving class! There is no cost for the class but a driving orientation (a 1 hour review on the road) is required for 15-passenger Vans and larger vehicles. Class time is about 2 Hrs. REMINDER: A valid state license is required to take the class. Individuals wanting a 15-Passenger Van license must have 3 years of driving experience. Leicester Central School’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration: People are needed to support the celebration by leading activities and/or performances either for Pre-K through 2nd graders or 3rd – 6th graders on the theme of MLK and social justice .
