Additional procedure for PC faculty/staff laptops

Hi all. A small addition to the procedure for checking out Dell PC laptops to faculty and staff. Remember how, with the faculty/staff Macbooks, we require patrons to log in using their own ID and password at the far-left part of the Circ Desk? Well, now we’re doing that for faculty/staff PCs as well. When you check out a Dell laptop to a faculty or staff member, please direct them to go to the far left part of the Circ Desk, plug into the Ethernet cable there, and log in the laptop using their own username and password. The purpose of this is for assured functionality so they can access personal files once they leave campus. If a problem occurs, refer them to a Circ Supervisor – we can troubleshoot, ask Helpdesk to step in, or exchange their faculty/staff laptop for another one. Students working in the evenings at the branches can call Main if a supervisor is needed. Thanks!

Please be careful with returns!

We’ve had a slew of returned items this week that haven’t been properly checked in, including a batch of five (yes, 5!) media items all returned by a faculty member that were reshelved without being checked in first. There have also been a number of Reserve items that haven’t been checked in properly. This causes a good amount of added stress and work for both the borrower and Circ staff.

Please check in all returns immediately at the check-in station and reshelve promptly. This is the best way to prevent confusion and missed check-ins.

As always, please alert a supervisor if you have any questions about a returned item. Thank you!

Spring Thesis Carrels @ Main

Hey everyone. Students are asking about how carrel signups will work this Spring, so I wanted to make sure staff and student workers knew what to tell them. There’s a couple of major changes, but we think people will like them.

Carrels will still be available first-come first-served only to seniors currently writing a thesis or independent project, and will still be available starting on the second Monday of classes (February 15). Seniors will still need to fill out a thesis application and pick the carrel they want from our master carrel map.

However, instead of early morning, carrels will start being handed out at 12 noon. We got some complaints about waiting in line before the building even opens, so we’re going to try 12 noon as a start time instead.

Also, students wanting carrels no longer need a Bannerweb printout! Dan has worked out a way, through Banner’s regular updates of Millennium, for all students who are registered for a thesis or independent project to show as a new patron-type: 6 – Thesis student. So instead of needing a printout from Bannerweb to confirm that a senior is enrolled in a thesis or project, their p-type will automatically update in Millennium. We simply need to swipe their ID card to confirm that they can get a carrel.

Hopefully these changes will make the process of getting a carrel easier for students and easier for us as well. If you have any questions, please ask!

Circ Student of the Week

shooting starCongratulations to Harlem!
Harlem has been nominated by Todd for her help and support in subbing for others at Main and Armstrong Libraries – and for signing up for a hard to fill Friday shift at Armstrong for the Winter Term.
Harlem, thanks for all your good work, your helpful, always kind and cheerful customer service and for your willingness to jump in wherever and whenever needed. Stop by Main Circ for your prize – a really yummy bag of chocolate biscotti cookies from my favorite NYC bakery. 🙂

Happy Friday to all – stop by Main Circ for a chocolate to celebrate Friday!

Shift Expectations – Required Reading!

Dear Student Employees,
Please read the following reminders regarding our expectations for you when you are at work.

THE DO LIST
Arrive on time, as scheduled.
Provide good customer service
Share the work equally with your shift partner – work together.
Check in with the supervisor on duty on arrival and at departure; tell your shift partner if you need to be away from the desk for a few minutes during your shift. Alert the supervisor if your replacement has not arrived when it is time for you to leave.
Put your Circ work first.
Respect the privilege of being able to do personal work.
Keep visits brief – plan your personal, lengthy, loud visiting for a time when you are not at work.
Turn off your phone when at work. Limit any personal phone calls while on shift.
Contain your stuff. Keep work areas tidy and professional looking.
Keep voices soft – our voices carry quite far!
Respect and maintain confidentiality of all library transactions and passwords.
Be attentive to the work and use good judgment.
Ask questions if you are not sure.
Eat chocolate and be happy.

THE DON’T LIST
Never leave the desk unattended.
Don’t let your shift partner do all the work.
Your Circ work is your priority – personal work is a privilege. Do not count on being able to use work time to complete time-sensitive, pressing assignments that require your full concentration.
Don’t eat full meals at the front desk – it’s hard to help someone with greasy fingers and food in your mouth – ask for a break if needed.
Don’t spread out your own stuff so far into work areas that it creates problems for transacting business.

Shift responsibilities:
Check-in with the shift supervisor.
Take the gate count.
Read the Circ Blog to stay informed.
Maintain accurate statistics.
Respond to the security gate alarm.
Provide accurate and efficient check-out and check-in of library materials.
Regularly check-in and accurately re-shelve returns. Take turns with your shift partner to process returns. Check that all returns have been checked in and re-shelved and that the returns work area is clear for the next shift.
Complete assigned tasks.
Look around you regularly throughout your shift – what needs doing?
Check in with the supervisor to see if there are any projects and assignments.
Allow time to process all returns before you leave.
Tidy your work area and leave it clean and organized for your co-worker.
Let the shift supervisor know when you are leaving.
Communicate any relevant information to your replacement and/or your supervisor.

A special thanks to you all for helping each other out by subbing for each other during the recent bout with illness.
Please stop by to chat about any concerns, any time. There’s usually candy in my office…:-)
