Entertainment Industry Voices— KS and R: Appetite for social grows as video becomes main course
What is social video and why should you care? It’s the video clips your friends and family share on Facebook, the funny prank reel you watched on repeat on YouTube and the newest dance challenge you tried to master on TikTok. These videos have become an increasingly important part of the fabric of entertainment. For some, this content represents an opportunity to reinvent what entertainment means for consumers with companies like Facebook spending over a billion dollars a year on content. The very DNA of social networks have become intertwined with video. Of the three or more hours a day consumers spend on social media, more than half of that time is spent watching videos on these platforms from news and talk shows to music videos and makeup tutorials. The Craven Conversations with Sarah Beers, Emmy Award Winning Costume Designer: June 10 @ 7PM EDT
MNFF welcomes Sarah Beers, Emmy Award winning costume designer and longtime Middlebury resident, to the Craven Conversations tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10 at 7p on Zoom. Ms. Beers will take viewers through her process of imagination and creation of film, theater and television costumes, illuminating how the work informs and enlarges the consideration of characters. She will show research photos and sketches along with pictures of actors in costume for the film and television work she does. She will also discuss her work on both seasons of the WGN America/SONY series Outsiders and Jay Craven’s film, Peter and John, where she mentored college students involved in the film’s ambitious costume design work. Ms. Beers grew up in Middlebury and attended Middlebury Union High School. Her uncle taught Spanish at Middlebury College and her grandfather was born and raised in Charlotte. She graduated from Connecticut College, where she designed an interdisciplinary major in Theater and Studio Art, and through those courses and her work-study duties in the theater department, she became interested in costume design as a profession. During her senior year in college, Beers was awarded a Watson Fellowship to study costumes at the Royal Ballet and Opera in London. She also spent time working in marionette fabrication at Marionettes de Geneve in Switzerland.
Her film credits include Maria Full of Grace, nominated for a 2005 Academy Award. Beers won an Emmy for her work on the television mini-series The Men Who Built America. Other television costume design credits include extensive work on the recent NBC hit drama Blindspot and the long running FX series Rescue Me.

Time4Coffee is a social enterprise — the centerpiece of which is a podcast — dedicated to helping college students, grad students and young professionals still looking for the right job in the right career, navigate a rapidly changing global job marketplace.
As the Time4Coffee name implies, these in-depth ‘caffeinated career conversations’ and related blog posts, explore many of the same topics covered when people meet, in person, over a cup of coffee to ask for career advice. However, without personal connections and geographic proximity, most young people wouldn’t have entrée to meet these professionals in person. Therefore, Time4Coffee’s mission is to level the playing field so that no matter who you know (or don’t know) and no matter where you live, you can still have access to the same amazing career advice 24/7 just by pressing play.
Time4Coffee also aims to leverage social media platforms like Facebook Live, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram to generate meaningful engagement between young people and professionals, from the entry-level up to the C-suite, around the country and the world.

Career Conversation with Academy Award Winner Rodney Rothman’95 (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)
Rodney Rothman ’95 is a director, writer, and producer who most recently co-wrote and co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. He previously served as a producer or writer on the films 22 Jump Street, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Popstar, and Get Him to the Greek. In television, Rothman was hired as a staff writer at The Late Show with David Letterman when he was 21 years old. At 24, he was promoted to head writer, making him the youngest head writer in the program’s history. While serving as head writer, he was nominated for five Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program and helped the show win three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety, Comedy or Musical Program. In addition, Rothman served as a writer and a supervising producer on the series Undeclared and created the HBO comedy pilot $5.15/Hr. along with director Richard Linklater. Rothman is the author of the best-selling nonfiction humor book Early Bird. His writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, GQ, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, and McSweeney’s Quarterly. His piece “My Fake Job” was included in The Best American Nonrequired Reading, edited by Dave Eggers.

Academy Nicholl Fellowships
Each year, the Academy Nicholl screenwriting competition awards up to five $35,000 fellowships to amateur screenwriters. To enter, submit a feature length screenplay and entry fee via the online application when the competition is open for submissions. Fellowship winners are invited to participate in awards week ceremonies and seminars and expected to complete at least one original feature film screenplay during the Fellowship year.
Qualifications
Screenwriters who have not earned more than $25,000 writing fictional work for film or television.
Entry scripts must be the original work of one writer, or of two writers who collaborated equally, and must be written originally in English. Adaptations and translated scripts are not eligible.
Entry Deadline
There are three deadlines for 2020: early is March 6 ($48 entry fee), regular is April 9 ($63 entry fee), and late is May 1 ($88 entry fee). The online application form must be completed and a PDF version of the script uploaded by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on May 1.
Full-time students at an accredited college/university are eligible for a discount on their entry fee in 2020. Indicate your status in the demographic section of your online application. The discount will be offered in the payment section.

Ryan Koo is the writer and director of AMATEUR, a 2018 Netflix Original Film and a Sundance Screenwriters Lab selection. Koo won the Webby Award for Best Drama Series and was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Film for his web series THE WEST SIDE. He is also the Founder and CEO of the popular filmmaking website No Film School.

Career Conversation with Screen Writer and Television Producer Showrunner Jeff Bushell ’94
Jeff Bushell is a screen writer and television producer showrunner who has written for Jim Carrey, Will Farell, Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Farris, Bernie Mac, James Franco and Kamil Najani. Earlier this year, Jeff sold his spec BAD DOG to Lionsgate with Seth Rogen’s Point Grey producing along with Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell’s 3Pas Studios. Jeff also wrote the Black List script RICKY STANICKY which Peter Farrelly is attached to direct as well as Disney’s BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA. On the television side, he was an Executive Producer/showrunner for Nickelodeon BELLA AND THE BULLDOGS and was the Co-Creator and Showrunner for MARVIN, MARVIN. He also previously served as a Consultant for DRAWN TOGETHER on Comedy Central, and as Executive Story Editor for WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU and Story Editor for THE BERNIE MAC SHOW, both on FOX.
