Energy Action Network is Hiring Summer Interns
Energy Action Network (EAN) is now accepting applications for our summer internship program for 2 college students (rising juniors or seniors) or graduate students. The program, run by EAN Senior Fellow Christine Donovan with support from EAN staff, gives the interns a broad introduction to the energy community in Vermont, while supporting them to do focused research. Last year’s EAN interns performed vital research on energy equity in Vermont. This year we are looking for interns who will develop and carry out a defined research, writing, or social media project directly related to the ongoing work of EAN. Examples might include:
- Conducting a piece of research or analysis that could support the work of the Vermont Climate Council, expand the EAN Emissions Pathways Model, or be featured in the EAN 2022 Annual Progress report.
- Researching and writing a series of case studies describing energy policies and initiatives in other states addressing issues of energy inequity or equitable GHG reduction strategies, and analyzing how they might apply in Vermont.
- Writing, editing, and producing a series of 5-minute videos highlighting key findings in the forthcoming 2020/21 Annual Progress Report. Develop and helping implement a statewide dissemination strategy.
Please pass this internship opportunity on to likely candidates. Deadline for applications is April 9.

Salvation Farms is Looking to Hire a Gleaning Coordinator
Salvation Farms’ mission is to build increased resilience in Vermont’s food system through agricultural surplus management. Our work explores diverse opportunities to respond to Vermont’s surplus farm food in an effort to build food system security and regional food resilience. We run a gleaning program, serve as backbone support to the Vermont Gleaning Collective, and have operated a surplus crop food hub and workforce development program. Other aspects of our work include technical assistance, creating resources for gleaners, supply chain development, experiential education, community building, cross-sector colleague collaboration, research, dialogue facilitation, and state, regional, and national engagement.
Our Lamoille Valley Gleaning program dates back to the start of Salvation Farms (2005). Gleaning is the reaping of crops after the harvest. Today our gleaning program serves upwards of two dozen farms and orchestrates weekly, year-round distribution of gleaned produce to more than 40 different recipient sites: youth organizations, Meals on Wheels kitchens, community programs, and food shelves. In recent years, LVG staff and volunteers glean and distribute 50,000-70,000 pounds annually of high-quality, locally grown produce that would have otherwise been lost on farms.
Position Summary
The Gleaning Coordinator is responsible for providing Lamoille Valley farms with professionally-coordinated gleaning services, engaging community members in hands-on learning and farm-fresh food rescue, and coordinating the regular distribution of surplus crops to create a more inclusive, secure local food system. The Gleaning Coordinator regularly partners with member organizations of the Vermont Gleaning Collective on regional or large-scale gleans, distribution, and program collaboration. Salvation Farms’ Gleaning Coordinator will serve a complimentary role to the organization’s other agricultural surplus management strategies including such activities as minimal processing and brokering of Vermont’s farm surplus produce.
A strong candidate is a people person that has produce farming experience, physical and mental endurance, excellent time and people management skills, and the ability to oversee a diversity of responsibilities.

Summer Undergraduate Clean Energy Advocacy Internships at Vermont Law School
The Institute for Energy and the Environment at Vermont Law School is again offering 2-3 summer internships for students in environmental studies and sciences who have at least completed their sophomore year by the start of the internship. Our Clean Energy Advocacy Internships offer a chance for 2-3 students interested in future careers in clean energy advocacy to spend the summer with us at our Institute for Energy and the Environment (Summer 2021 internship is likely to be fully virtual again) and to work on one of our research or energy clinic teams which are each made up of 3-5 Master of Energy Regulation and Law grad students or JD students specializing in energy law with faculty supervision. Our teams are currently working on Climate Justice issues ranging from advancing community solar for underserved communities and affordable net zero housing development to other important clean energy transition issues such as sustainable solar siting on agricultural lands and exploring energy and environmental policy issues around biodigesters for our Farm and Energy Initiative.
Last summer we had three great virtual interns, from Siena College in New York, the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota, and a student with the Environmental Fellows Program at DePauw University in Indiana and we are excited to hear from you about why we should select one of your deserving students this year.
Clean energy advocacy interns are paid a $1,000 stipend (taxable), can take one of our two-week summer sessions energy classes for free (2 credits) and work with our faculty and masters/JD students on real clean energy projects. The internship begins June 1, the day after Memorial day, and ends Thursday, August 5th (we have some flexibility in start/stop dates) which is the same as our summer environmental program. Application materials include a current resume, cover letter explaining the student’s interest in a clean energy advocacy career, and one letter of recommendation from an undergraduate professor (they can follow other materials if necessary). Applications are due via email by Monday, April 5th at Noon (Eastern) to Molly Smith, IEE Program Coordinator, msmith@vermontlaw.edu . If you are interested in apply for this summer internship, please reach out to Tracy Himmel Isham (thimmeli@middlebury.edu) or Tim Mosehauer (tmosehau@middlebury.edu).
