Internship Tips from CCI’s Peer Career Advisor, Ivy Yang ’20 – APPLY EARLY!
Sometimes internship postings hire on a rolling basis but only post a final deadline date. If you have your eye on an internship that you know you want to apply to, don’t wait until the deadline.
If you have questions about the internship, networking with someone at the company can be a good way to find out how their hiring process works and can give you some more clarity. Unsure about how to network? Start by joining Midd2Midd and search by the company name to see if there are alumni there to connect with!
It’s a good idea to apply early for several reasons. First, once you submit your application, you don’t have to think about working on it anymore and can relax. It’s just a waiting game from then on and there’s not much you can do about it. Second, even if you are the perfect candidate, by waiting until the deadline, you may be hurting your chances of getting the internship because the position may have already been filled. Applying early means that if you are a good fit, the company will have spots available, and you may have a better chance of getting an interview and being hired. However, applying early does not mean rushing through your résumé and cover letter. It is still important to take your time to work on the application and make sure that it is the best it can possibly be.
Need help with your résumé and/or cover letter? Peer Career Advisors are here to help! go/PCAs for their Quick Question hours – OR – join us for our Résumé Review Week March 16-20 and enjoy snacks while you meet with a PCA!

Alaska Fellows Program Working in the Social Sector
Interested in the social sector & working in Alaska? The Alaska Fellows Program (AFP) is a seven-to-nine month residential fellowship program that nurtures the next generation of Alaska-based leaders by pairing talented young people with strong communities and professional mentors.
Initially launched with a small pool of Yale graduates in 2014, the program now boasts alumni from 28 states and five countries and hosts fellows in Anchorage, Juneau, Sitka — and starting in fall 2020, Fairbanks. Forty-one percent of alumni continue to live and work in Alaska for a year or more following their fellowships.
By attracting young, dynamic professionals to the state of Alaska, AFP arrests and reverses the “brain drain” of young people supersaturating in Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, New York, and D.C. AFP also helps Alaska retain homegrown talent by connecting born-and-raised Alaskans with high-impact opportunities in their home state.
Fellows serve with a dynamic non-profit or public-sector organization for the fellowship term and receive modest living stipends and housing. Fellows live communally, work closely with professional mentors, and make lasting contributions to their host community.
For more information about the Application Process, view this page, as it will also give you a listing of the different available jobs posting throughout Spring 2020.
Are you looking for seed funding to work on a personal project this summer?
The Innovation Hub invites you to apply to MiddChallenge, a pitch competition that gives students (including graduating seniors) the opportunity to win up to $3,000 to work on their innovation ideas this summer.
A little briefing on how the competition works — students will choose to apply to one of four different competition categories: Business, Technology, Social Impact and Sustainability, and Arts. Students should submit their applications before March 19th. The top proposals in each category will be selected to pitch their idea for 10 minutes to a panel of judges, and two projects in each category will receive funding. Past winners have worked on their project either full time or alongside another summer internship. More info about the event, including the application form, can be found at go/middchallenge. Please reach out to mbenti@middlebury.edu with any questions.
