I really enjoyed being able to read the poems aloud. I think I was able to notice and hear things I had never heard when I just read it alone, and appreciated that the rest of the class felt similarly.
I enjoyed our discussion on the poem “Mexicans Begin Jogging” by Gary Soto. I’ve continued to think about the “great, silly grin” the narrator wore. And essentially how one is able to laugh about something and reclaim power, even in situations where they face prejudice and are degraded. Overall, I’m really liking the poems we’re reading and this class in general.
I really enjoyed the discussion surrounding this poem as well! One thing that I did not get the chance to mention during our talk was the unnatural flow of the poem. It felt like there were frequent interruptions and it was not until we read it out loud as a class that I noticed the familiarity of such pauses. The poem “Mexicans Begin Jogging” sounds like someone is jogging when read aloud. This style gives more life to the poem and story.
Yes, great observation, I’ve never thought of how the flow/pacing of the poem’s language reflects jogging in this way.
I really appreciated hearing so many perspectives about one poem or one section of writing. When I am exposed to how other people perceive and analyze literature, I expand my own ability to perceive and analyze. It broadens how I think about writing and what to look for when reading. I also just enjoy talking about literature with other people. I love exploring different authors and styles and I think this class is a great opportunity to do exactly that. Furthermore, it’s been so fun meeting new people in the Feb class and hearing their stories via the personal narratives.
