We had a superb visit with Dave Eggers and Jim James (from the band My Morning Jacket). We talked  about creativity, imagination, and education. The two generously joined a group of Fern Creek students (in Louisville, KY)  for two hours that flew by like 15 minutes.

We enjoyed some Nepali Samosas with tomato chutney courtesy of Man and Puja (who were in Cooking 101 with me last trimester) and we  had a great conversation that focused on the election, friendship, the cross-pollination of ideas, inspiration, writing and acting for change, teaching and learning, and creative boldness/confidence.  They were visiting as part of a Teach Kentucky fundraiser, conversation, and dinner later in the night. (Joe Franzen and I got to be on the stage with Jim and Dave for part of the conversation–and we joined them for the dinner as well…such a huge honor!) The conversation focused on the same topics, and the two were incredibly complimentary of their visit to Fern Creek and our students, which also warmed our hearts.

  1. Eloise Lynch says:

Having outsiders (especially well-known/successful outsiders) invest in students’ lives and educational experiences is huge. So great you were able to communicate that all-important-message to your kids: you matter; the world cares; we want you to succeed.
