return-to-sender-paperbackMembers of the BLTN from around the globe, and young writers connected to the network, will participate this spring in an international reading and writing event focusing on Return to Sender, Julia Alvarez’ young adult novel about the lives of undocumented farm workers. Tentatively billed as a “read-in/write-in,” the heart of the event will be promoted by Andover Bread Loaf (ABL) in Andover, MA, and its close affiliate, the members of the BLTN in Lawrence, MA. It will include participants from school districts and colleges as far flung as Nairobi, Kenya, and Sierra Vista, AZ, who will read Return to Sender; correspond with Julia Alvarez via her website, where she describes what and why she’s writing; exchange ideas with one another via the Internet; and discuss issues similar to the ones posed by the novel. Finally, the participants will write their own poems, stories, essays and lyrics based on those issues and perform them at open mic events all over the world, under the auspices of the BLTN! Tentatively scheduled to begin in February 2014, the event’s details are yet to be announced, so be sure to keep an eye peeled for more information communicated by Andover Bread Loaf’s website.
