Please choose of the three options for your final paper, due 12/12 at 11:59pm (emailed to me as a word or pdf file).  The final paper should be no less than twelve pages long.

1) How does Papa Sartre simultaneously encompass and undermine the themes, modes of writing, and intellectual framework of Arabic literary culture in the 20th century?

2) Based on the literature, literary theory, and the secondary sources that we’ve read for this class, please write a narrative description of the development, growth, and evolution of Arabic literature during the 20th and 21st centuries.  Put simply: imagine you’ve been tasked with writing a twelve page encyclopedia entry on Arabic literature in the 20th and 21st centuries.  Your final paper will be that entry.

3) You are free to write a research paper on a topic of your choice that addresses any aspect of modern Arabic literature.  For instance, you may choose to write about an individual work, an individual author, a group of works, a number of authors, or any combination of the two that you see fit.

As your write your paper, stay in close touch with the source texts.  Any assertion should be accompanied by a citation from the primary or secondary texts that we’ve read.  You are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the reserve readings for ARBC221 on hold for you at the circulation desk in the Davis Family Library, as well as the studies of various aspects of modern Arabic literature in the library’s stacks (check out the books in the PJ500’s).  Also, don’t forget to search for ideas and scholarship in the electronic journals available through the library website; simply searching an author’s name, a novel or poem’s title, or a specific literary trend will yield ample results through the JSTOR digital journal archive.
