1) Participation: Students are always responsible for preparing the assigned texts for in-class discussion. Participation is factored into the grade; therefore, unexcused absences will have a detrimental effect on your overall participation grade. Excused absences must be confirmed by your Common’s Dean in an email to me, or by a physician’s note.

2) Papers: You will be responsible for two three-page papers and one 12-page paper. Each paper must be submitted electronically to me as a pdf file by 11:59pm on the day it is due. The topic for each paper will be assigned to you by the instructor (and can be found on the course syllabus and website).

All written work must conform to the following guidelines:

  • font no larger or smaller than Times 12
  • double spaced
  • 1 inch margins, all sides
  • page numbers, bottom center
  • parenthetical source information following citations. Examples:

Textual citation (book): “Something has happened to me, I can’t doubt it any more. It came as an illness does, not like an ordinary certainty, not like anything evident” (Sartre, Nausea, p. 4).

Textual citation (article): “[In] sum, Sartre is a libertarian phenomenologist” (Gardener, “Sartre, Schelling, and onto-theology, p. 247).

Oral citation: “Libertarian phenomenology has barely registered in contemporary Arabic literary thought” (Liebhaber, 10/29/2014).

**Unless accompanied by a note from your Common’s Dean or a physician’s note, late papers will be penalized.**

3) Quizzes: There will be five short identification exams during the course of the semester to reward students who are keeping up with the readings.

4) You will be obligated to do two, 8-10 minute presentations during the semester. The topic will be assigned to you by the instructor; details can be found on the course syllabus and accompanying website.
