The above picture depicts only a few of many international and regional agencies involved in the education system of Colombia. Some of the most influential are discussed here:

OECD: This year, Colombia was one of two countries to be offered membership to the Organization of Education and Cultural Development (OECD). Colombia is currently in the process of joining 34 current members as it undergoes many social and economic assessments. As of today, Colombia does not meet OECD standards related to school enrollment rates; this is an issue currently being addressed by the OECD. They have also done several extensive reports regarding socio-economic policies in need of improvement. Joining the OECD will provide Colombia with more foreign aid in order to better resolve educational and other issues that the country faces (OECD, 2013.) colombia-map-shutterstock-300x250

World Bank:  The World Bank approved the second of two 200 million dollar loans to Colombia to help support the proposed budget program of the president Juan Manuel Santos for education; the first of which was approved in 2003 to better help Colombia compete in the global market economy. With this loan, the World Bank director for Colombia stated, “we welcome Colombia’s continuous efforts to consolidate an improved fiscal management. Sound finances, along with good tax and pension systems, are key to the development of any country” (The World Bank, 2012.)

requisitos-icetexICETEX: (colombian institute for educational loans and technical studies abroad): ICETEX was founded in 1952 as the the national body in charge of administering scholarships for international cooperation. They have been successfully working to increase mobility among students in Latin America. Colombia is now ranked second in Latin American for sending students abroad, however the country is still low in the amount of students it receives. This is because the Latin American Education system has begun to gain status, but still a long way to go until it is accepted internationally and even domestically. ICETEX is working to improve these statistics (Jaramillo, 2006.)

RCI: (network for the internationalization of Higher Education): This network was formed in 1996 and includes most international relations offices in the higher education system. The objective of the network is to strengthen the culture of international cooperation among higher education institutions through conducting workshops, meetings, and seminars to assist institutions in internationalization efforts (Jaramillo, 2006.)
