Dear Colleague,

This message is to inform you of a change to the Student Wage Scale effective January 1, 2011

The Vermont Department of Labor announced that the Vermont minimum wage will increase from $8.06 per hour to $8.15 per hour on January 1st

http://www.labor.vermont.gov/Portals/0/UI/WH-11%20Minimum%20Wage%20Rate.pdf

The level A base rate for student employees is currently $8.10.  Therefore, the Student Wage Scale will need to increase to stay in compliance with wage and hour laws.

Effective January 1st the rates in all levels (A,B, and C) will increase 5 cents.  The wage scale has been updated on the SEO website to reflect this change
http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/business/seo/paid/wagescale and is posted below for your convenience.

Remember, the number of years represents the number of years the student has been in the same job (not their class year).  Hourly rates for student employees currently working in on campus positions will change on January 1 to reflect the new wage scale.   There is nothing you need to do as the supervisor to make this happen (please don’t send in Payroll Authorization Forms for students already working).

Students will be notified of the wage scale change via email.

Budgeting

The student wage lines were automatically increased by 3% for FY09 by the Budget Office, so this will most likely have no budget impact.  If you have questions about your student wage budget, please contact the Budget Office http://www.middlebury.edu/offices/business/budget

Budget Administrators should take into account when planning for the next fiscal year that the student wage scale may increase in January.  We cannot predict what the wage scale will look like (i.e. all levels increasing 5 cents, or 10 cents, or just an increase to base level A).  We will inform you as soon as we get the information.

As always, please be in touch if you have any questions. 802.443.5377 • seo@middlebury.edu • 802.443.5465 • hr@middlebury.edu
