Week 13 Day 1 Discussion Question 1

Dogtown Redemption documents the conflict between West Oakland homeowners and a small number of homeless people who make their living by redeeming bottles, cans, and other recyclables. In publicity for the film, the recyclers are described as the nation’s “untouchables.” As you watched the film excerpt, were your sympathies with the recyclers or the homeowners? How does contemplating the plight of homeless people like those in Dogtown Redemption alter or enrich your thinking about the U.S. class structure?
