In “Class, Labor, and the Home-Front Detective,” Dennis Broe argues that the changing conventions of the detective genre mirrored the changing fortunes of the labor movement in the 1940s.  If the police represent government authority in Murder, My Sweet, what does that say about the status of organized labor at the time of its release?  According to Broe, which characters are aligned with the working class in the film?
