The crowning of the king and queen of Winter Carnival was important for the culture of the celebrated weekend during its early years. It was one of the most anticipated events out of all the festivities. The coronation was significant because the carnival could not officially begin until the king and queen had been named. Nominations for the carnival royalty were made prior to the festivities, and the kings and queens were usually elected for winter sport participation.

Through the years, there was a change in the place in which the king and queen were crowned. Before 1953, the coronation of the king and queen was held on the women’s ice skating rink, but after this year, the crowning moved to the Carnival Ball.┬áThe royalty would enter the dance wearing purple velvet robes and then be officially crowned and proclaimed the king and queen. The king and queen would reign from the start of Winter Carnival until the end of the celebrations.
