I never expected this…

When I accepted an internship working with OneReef in Micronesia, I knew I was going to have an amazing, life changing summer, but I never expected this. In the past month, I have not only had the opportunity to learn more about OneReef, who assists communities with the protection, conservation, and monitoring of their coral reefs, but I have also traveled and worked throughout the region. I first traveled to Helen Reef, a remote marine protected area in the southwest islands of Palau, with the Hatohobei community. While there, we watched green sea turtles come to shore and nest, helped release healthy baby green sea turtles, did some coral reef assessments, and helped support the conservation officers who live and work on Helen Reef. Then, I traveled to the island of Yap in Micronesia with OneReef CEO Chris LaFranchi to meet with communities who are conserving and monitoring their coral reefs and fishing grounds to discuss future and existing agreements. In this short period of time, I have had the opportunity to observe and participate in almost every aspect of OneReef from talking with funders, to negotiating agreements, to managing existing agreements. Welcomed by the Hatohobei community in Palau, I have also had the opportunity to assist with activities of the HOPE Foundation that works to build the capacity of the conservation officers in Palau to more effectively monitor their conservation areas as well as educate their communities on the rules of the conservation areas. With more than two months to go, I am truly excited about how much I am learning and how much I may be able to contribute.
