Food Forward is Southern California’s largest food rescue for the hungry resource. The organization was founded in 2009 as a backyard harvesting group, gleaning food from fruit trees in neighborhood backyards to be distributed to those in need. Within the first year, the organization mobilized over 500 volunteers to harvest over 70,000 pounds of backyard fruit for those in need. Since 2009, Food Forward has grown it’s volunteer community to more than 6,000 Southern Californians, with total 1.4 million pounds of fresh produce harvested or rescued going to those lacking access. Food Forward continues to expand its efforts through new innovative programming . The organization rescues food at farmers markets, from farms, backyards, and soon wholesale food companies in Downtown Los Angeles. Food Forward has become a leader in the food waste world and continues to build community around the issue, creating thousands of opportunities to become involved in the movement!
