WRMC

- Looking for concert funding that is not from MCAB, Student Activities or MMU.

- Received funding for Fall Concert and Small Concert Series.

- Still need funding for Sepomena 2012.

- $9,960 of $11,800. Have $3,500 left from operating budget.

- Still have to pay licensing and Gary, operator.

- Why is funding important? MCAB has a good role of bringing big name artists in large venues. BUT WRMC wants to satisfy more people.

- Create a music scene. Smaller venues. Smaller budgets.

- Sepomena (What they want the budget for). Want $15,000.

- Goal is to increase the quality and profile of the bands. Increase attendance. Recoup costs with ticket sales.

- Revenue from previous shows have been $1750-$2000.

- Make it cheap and affordable for students.

- Want to develop more musical tastes.

- Looking to collaborate with other concert organization on campus.

- In the past when MCAB handled funding, revenue went back to MCAB.

Architecture Table

- Hello Wyatt and Casey!

- Discussion group that meets every two weeks.

- Want to bring in speakers, screenings and field trips (Modern Vermont Tour).

- One year subscription to Architecture Record. $50 budget.

- Email list is 100 people. Attendance to meeting is about 25.

- Also want architecture supplies. For the use of the whole group.

- Cut guest lectures, which they can get funding through MCAB Speakers. Cut field trips until we get more details. Cut film screenings in half- $250 is reasonable for a single film to start. Cut architectural supplies, which are essentially giveaways. Cut other event expenses, which are included in discretionary. Vote $500 5-0.

Japanese Club

- Hello Jerry and Jenny

- Japanese Fashion Show during J-Term. In McCullough Social Space.

- Educational—open to entire school. Free of charge. Commentators during the show to explain subcultures and other elements of Japanese fashion.

- No food and no after show activities, which would only benefit participants of the show, not the broader community- not part of the club’s mandate. Vote $1200 5-0

Middlebrow Improv

- Hello Mark and Alyssa

- Want to do a February Tour. Last year it was funded by their revenue from MiddQuid.

- Want to do “Beanpot Competition”. Improv Olympics at Improv Boston.

- Want to do T-shirts to be self-sustaining.

- $870. T-shirts will be on loan (Leo). $200 for discretionary.

Palana

- Hello?

- No-shows.

JStreet U Middlebury

- Funding for a training workshop during J-Term.

- Student leaders of JStreet U will spend Jan. 12-15 with other student leaders around the country. They will learn new strategies for programming, engaging students and they will also have an opportunity with other leaders in the organizations.

- 2 seniors and 1 junior will go. Although they will be graduating, they will be able to build instant connections with the bigger organization. Hopefully this will benefit the club.

- Just $600 dollars for program fees. 5-0

Feb celebration committee:

Very similar to last years

Only change is a 21 Days party at two brothers

Detailed. No substantial questions were raised.

$7,700 raised to $7,800. $100 added to the discretionary. 4-0

Sailing:

$191.50 taken out of gift account during the summer, because operating account was inaccessible when the invoice was submitted (late) from Dunmore Acres, where the team stores their boats.

Voted 6-0 to transfer $191.50 to gift account.

Globemed – World Aids day:

Raise awareness about aids “people kind of know about it”

(We’ve known about aids since the ‘80’s????)

“This year’s aids day is very important to us”

Ribbon/pin “just to give out”

These ribbons will supposedly help us think about aids in sub-Saharan Africa?

Ribbons are symbolic of HIV-AIDS(?)

Jello® shots were discussed—

Precedent setting vote- We will now fund reasonable expendables if this vote passed

Voted 4-2 in favor of ribbons for AIDS Day. Rational: Show the importance of aids around the campus, and raise significant level of campus awareness.

Crew:

Substantial portion of Crew’s budget remains unseen.

What can we reasonably expect to pay for?

Assistant Coach-paid at $12 an hour (~$8,000/yr)

Coaches Novice team.

Coached at Cal in the ‘70’s

Regatta entry Fees are Substantial: $7,100 yearly.

Transportation costs-

Buses: sometimes charter to avoid dangerous student driving at bad hours

Truck: cover maintenance costs even though they share with the Nordic ski team

Vans

Diesel

Capital expenditures—

Docks circa $10,000 will need to be replaced in the next few years.

Trailer will also need to be replaced.

Further discussion on deprecation proposed:

Around $2,000 per year.

None of it is saved.

Want to increase number to allow new boats to be replaced. Desired amount 5-8 Grand

Loan-due at the spring of each year.

First payment spring of 2013.

Decided to give crew more money for their operating budget to alleviate their dependence on fundraising. Raised their budget to $23,550. Operating Budget raised by $5,000.

In the spring FC would like to see five year plan for their organization.

Yoga: New Club

They were inspired their first semester by a yoga class they took

Sophomore fall, they got funding from Atwater

They lost funding due to bureaucratic complications and people had to pay

Abroad in the spring, now back and interested in creating a venue through which students can consistently enjoy free yoga classes

Email list of ~80 students

Teacher’s rate (very reasonable): half the amount it would cost for a student to take class in town

Each class would cost $150 at a rate of $7.50/student x 20 students; thus having open admission would lower the per student cost

PE credit costs about $150 per student

Benefit: trained professional for safety and personal development

Vote taken 6-0. Rational: New club, unknown interest level. Decided to fund half of the eight proposed January sessions, and fund half of the tne proposed ten professional sessions during Spring Semester.

Midd Masti

-Planning on going to other events at other schools throughout the year and do not know the dates or costs for that yet.

-Would like $500 for costumes and accessories. For the ISO show and other things that they’d like to do.

-Planning to showcase a Bollywood film for $250 during the year.

-Were formed last spring and are coming in for new budget for this year.

-Approved for $950 out of $950, 5-0.

Footloose Salsa

-Would like to have live music, they’re looking for more of it this year.

-Hired an instructor for the Spring semester ($1000 for part of the Spring semester last year), and would like to do that for the entire spring semester this year ($2,250).

-Would like to have a Latin Dance Party, co-sponsoring with Allianza. Paying for the live performance and Allianza would cover all the other costs, including all the amenities.

-15-30 beginners, 10-20 intermediates.

-Approved 5-0 for $2,450 (dance instructor, table the Latin Dance Party for next time).

Arabesque

-Ahmad Ahmad comedian was contacted three weeks ago by club and agent said it was $5000 to bring comedian here. It might be negotiable but it wouldn’t be negotiable below $5,000. Includes food, accommodation, and transportation for him. They are thinking of bringing him up after Thanksgiving. They are thinking it will be in McCullough space and think attendance will be 100-150 people.

-Symposium at Harvard for Arab Spring, where registration fees would be $605 ($55 a person and 11 people), along with $550 for hotel reservation with food and $40 for food. This would be around the middle of November.

-This does not take into account personal contribution, but $10-$20 might be asked of each person if the amount above is not allocated.

-They have secured 11 people who are willing to go on the trip.

-Motion to table the Ahmad Ahmad performance because it is expensive and MCAB should help to cover such expenses, vote 5-0. Require a $20 personal contribution for the Harvard conferences’ fee, fund the rest of registration fees, fund the van in full, and fund their hotel reservations in full. $975 for the conference, vote 5-0.

Febs Celebration Committee

-Did not show up! Feb Graduation Week events, all self-explanatory.

-Inherited numbers from last year’s budget, doing the events with the same people.

-Flatbread is catered to the campus, doesn’t even know where. Wasn’t prepared.

-Vote 5-0 that they should come back with clearer details after discussing/planning.

Building Tomorrow:

They actively fundraise with events like “Brick-by-Brick” and “Bike to Uganda”

They’ve raised $3500 so far through programs such as “brick-by-brick” and “Bike to Uganda”.

Brick-by-Brick is supported by donations from local recycling centers and Bike to Uganda has bike riders that are sponsored like in any walk fundraiser.

Hoping to have this caramel apple-selling event in the next two weeks.

What they do has always butted heads with the Finance Committee, however JJ said that as long as they are not giving these away, it should be fine.

We will decide tonight whether or not Building Tomorrow will have to pay us back.

We have never funded something like this before and feel unwilling to set this new precedent. We can give them a loan totaling $210 so they can sell their apples and pay us back [Option 1]. Or they can hold the event, give away the apples, and then do a suggested donation [Option 2].

Arabesque:

Eid El-Adha Dinner, food costs, separate from Islamic Society

Henna Night- were ideally hoping for a professional, but are just buying some of the supplies and the girls are going to do it

Belly Dancing Workshop- it will include a party. They do not have the exact details and will come back for new money. The event should take place just before Thanksgiving.

Last year they had $1000 budget but did not have any screenings. They only did two dinners and one party, but it wasn’t nearly enough because it was only about once/semester. They had no off-campus presenters.

$0 for belly dancing, the poet, and the comedian. $1700 5-0.

Residential Sustainability Committee:

Started last year by Environmental Sustainability Office

4-5 freshmen per commons working with an upperclassman to bring awareness to freshman

This year expanding to school-wide and there are 5 heads per commons

Candelit dinners for Ross and would start doing it in Proctor, twice per month for seven months

Snack nights- locally sourced snacks once per month per commons

Student dorm projects: adding drying racks in the Commons Office, shower timers. $400 is just a rough estimate because they have not thought this out fully.

Local Vendor Fair: working with Georgia Best and Facilities to have local merchants to promote their wares. JJ said $200 should cover basic facility costs. Not sure when this is going to be. All vendors will have to be pre-approved by the bookstore and the business office. They will come back.

Ms. Bostwick is very pleased to see that they have made it past their first year. She was on Constitution Committee when they were approved.

Peter votes for $400 for Student Dorm Projects. Ryan votes $0 because they did not seem to have thought through the costs at all. 5-0 for $2000. Cut $200 from the Student Dorm Projects. $0 for the Local Vendor Fair, which they can come back to us for money once they figure out more details.

Drum Circle:

Last year they had money to buy extra instruments as well as money to bring a small workshop group. They never brought in a workshop group because another club did. They did buy some new percussion instruments.

This year the just want money for instrument repairs.

They meet about every 2 weeks. They used to meet in a small recording studio in FIC. Now they are trying to have a big drum circle in front of a dining hall.

About 20 drums, which all belong to the Music Department.

5-0 Approve $300.

SERT:

SERT being taken up as a wing of Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Service (provisional members) – a year from now, plan to have own ambulance for SERT that will be on call 7 days a week

Need uniforms that match the MVA standards, they will stay on campus

Major responsibility is responding to calls on campus

Student volunteers in Brandon, Bristol, and Vergennes want reimbursement for gas to and from the stations. Service in these areas boosts their credentials and helps promote members to become “crew chiefs”.

Training Expenses: want snacks to keep people awake, funds in case trainers are looking for an honorarium

$0 for Medical Equipment & Depreciation, because we feel that the SAF should be “used to enrich campus life, not save it”. The SAF should pay for the party, someone else should pay for the hangover. $200 for Training because we want them to come back for new money if they need any for honorariums. 4-0 for everything but.

Aikido Club:

Where were they in the spring?: Graduating seniors handed it off irresponsibly to Daivd & Rahul.

Fall Field Trip: Brattleboro, VT- seminar to practice and learn aikido. Half will be MiddKids, the other half will come from townies. They plan to have about 10 people down.

44 active participants who have shown up at least once. At least 30 active members. Even including one 6AM practice per week.

Spring Guest Instructor: Kimberly Richardson coming from Seattle. $800 for travel.

Operating budget: any extraneous costs, perhaps for a “thank you” dinner for their sensei.

Write the email nicely!!! Approve for $200 (discretionary). We love the club and its active membership, but want them to come back with more detailed budgets for their fall and spring events. 5-0 Vote.

Student Investment Committee:

Appealing one piece of the budget

Has emailed LIS and there is overlap so that’s fine.

They have extremely robust Middlebury base in connecting current students with these networks. Expecting 40 to 45 students down in New York for interacting with these employers and bankers but it is essential to fund the two leaders who are facilitating this job hunt.

SIC:

-Emily Post Etiquette workshop, not yet scheduled. Purpose is to train people to be better prepared for the job market.

-Fall Break Wall Street Tip- paying for hotel and travel to NYC (just gas costs for 1 personal car). Purpose is to connect juniors and seniors with potential employers.

-Money for Parent’s Weekend’s Panel Refreshment and for LIS subscriptions (personal- but the school already has subscriptions?).

Decision: $700 total. WE zeroed the resources because they already arranged it, pay for the Post workshop and for the panel refreshments, cut NYC trip (same reason for the ISO trip).

ISO:

-Filled out everything to get budget done in Spring but didn’t get there because of transitional issues. President was studying abroad but is now back.

-They want $700 for Cultural Dinners (bring a friend, host

-Thanksgiving trip and senior send-off are questionable. Last year senior send-off was in 51 Main and Atwater and is normally held in the Spring. This along with Cultural show are their biggest events.

-Publicity and welcome event come out and go into discretionary

-Social programming is what they want to increase this year and make their events bigger on campus.

-ISO Cultural Show- for costumes and props.

-Thanksgiving Break for international kids- they go off and travel to cities for the holidays. Two years ago, they chose not to fund the trip because the Committee sees it as paying for a vacation. But this year they would like that cost to include money for dinner on campus for international students ($400-$500)

ISO approved $4700 budget (less than last year’s), welcome event and publicity go into discretionary, along with Thanksgiving and travel because the students should pay for these miscellaneous expenses.

On Tap:

-Claim that leadership from last year fell apart- to blame for no budget.

-For anyone who wants to take a class on tap, they need to replace their current tap shoes and increase their inventory. Fall and Spring costumes are explanatory along with props.

-They have to pay for the STUDENT tech crew for spring show??? Have not heard of this before- MUST CHECK WITH CCAL.

-15 performers and 10-15 more for lessons.

-There were 20 pairs of shoes 3 years ago and now there are less than 10.

-They have not seen the budget from last year, cannot account for the reasons behing increase in budgets.

Decision: approve everything but tech, a total of $950 out of $1,200.

Climbing Wall Club:

-Claim that leadership did not show last year and fell apart. He’s a junior. Did not have budget last year, Derek Doucet and College supported the wall last year with very little money.

-Membership is from 600 to 700 people kept on electronic database.

-Plan for this year is to replace holds that are worn out and also for repairing certain shoes. Need new cabinet, sanitizer, bulletin boards, chalk, resole of old shoes, bin for holds, food for routesetting events, and bits.

-Want professional trainer to come in to teach about the wall– clinic event.

-25 to 30 people per day. 60% are regular users and 40% checking it out.

Decision: We cut out bulletin boards (extraneous), halved the money for food for the route setting trips (we believe based on past performance that it is not realistic that they’ll have four, if they do, they can dip into discretionary), and halved the amount for resole of deteriorated shoes (because of our investment in new shoes). Everything else is approved in full: $3115.

Philosophy Club:

-Approved last year and are here for new budget as a new club.

-Created because the President wanted a place to talk to non-majors and majors about philosophy. Wanted a place to talk about philosophy outside of the classroom.

-Department is small and there isn’t much time to explore fields of philosophy that aren’t offered here at the College.

-Weren’t at the Activities Fair, claim they didn’t go because they didn’t have a budget or agenda yet for this year.

-Want money for four discussions (snacks, etc.), rights purchase for movie (Inception), and would like to do symposium for faculty and students at the end of the semester at Mister Up’s. They want to do the same stuff for the same price in the Spring, but Symposium at Crossroads.

Decisions: Refreshments were rolled into the discretionary, movie rights given for the Fall to make sure they spend it but not the Spring yet (they can come back if the first proved successful), and funding was given for both symposiums. $1050 approved in full.

Moss and Dylan Publication:

-Looking to start an arts literary publication to do something very dufferent than what exits on campus right now.

-Want to become an official student organization.

-Core reason for publication- they have a need to put it in print in essence to make it what it is.

-Why is this going to be different? They have submissions as a process to submit works- it’s a showcase of literary talent and skill on campus. This will be different- they will commission people to work on a project based on their interests and majors and outside skills. They want to challenge the way publications are made (3-D, covers, etc). Other publications are mish-mashed with different, unrelated stories.

-The commissioned works will not be very long- pieces will be under 2 pages.

-It’s the design that matters- treat it as important as the content.

-Improve the cohesiveness of magazine. All workers will be volunteers.

Delaying this until Constitutional approval.

Cricket:

-People on the team have been decreasing in number but they want to try to revive the team. Want to make a team with Bates and Amherst (combined team). Could go to Dartmouth and Montreal for matches. This would only go to Middlebury students though. Four or five students here are on the team.

-Would like 2 new kits, money for the matches, and online screening subscription. Have one kit that is six or seven years old. Only have bats.

Decision: We cut the cricket kits (because their discretionary is way too big for 4-5 people) and approved everything else in full– $660.

Umoja:

-Person in leadership didn’t go to the meeting last year

-Big Sibling Program- Grille Gift Certificate- money for them to eat together.

-A trip to Burlington- would like food and transport covered

-Mbele Africa Event- money for registration and transport

-Table tents about Africa countries- what they did last year with printing in color.

-Atwater dinner in the spring- this is usually covered by the school though.

-Seminal reading series- want snacks and refreshments for this series.

Decision: The trip to Burlington and Atwater dinner (covered by school) were cut, as was printing which is budgeted for already in discretionary.

$640 out of $1040 approved 5-1.
