S. Grady Welsh Selected as a Goldwater Scholar

Congratulations to S. Grady Welsh ’24 who was named a 2023 Goldwater Scholar! The Goldwater Scholarship Program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Grady plans to pursue a PhD in ecology and study interactions between climate change and wetlands. The 413 Scholars this year were selected from 1267 natural science, engineering and mathematics students nominated by 427 academic institutions. Eligibility: current sophomore or junior; U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident; demonstrated commitment to work with environmental issues through academic study and activities. The Udall Scholarship provides up to $7,000 for tuition, fees, educational expenses.

Applications Open for the Frederick Douglas Global Fellowship (summer program)

During the four-week summer program, 12 fellows will travel to Washington, DC, Cape Town, Dublin, Derry, and Belfast to explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, John Lewis, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Daniel O’Connell, John Hume, and other giants of social change.  The program runs July 7 – August 4, 2023, with the first week taught virtually and the next three weeks taught on-site. Fellows will study how changemakers shaped pathways to peace, including the Emancipation Proclamation in America, the end of Apartheid in South Africa, and the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. Eligibility

  • Be a current undergraduate freshman, sophomore or junior
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident
  • Identify as an ethnicity typically underrepresented on study abroad programs (e.g. American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander).
  • Submit a complete application no later than February 14

Fulbright UK Summer Institute Application Opens Nov 30!

The Fulbright UK Summer Institutes are three to four week programmes for US undergraduate students, who have no or very little travel experience outside North America. Participants can explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Study alongside leading academics and professionals
  • Develop knowledge in specific fields
  • Experience cultural and social events
  • Visit UK cultural sites and areas of scenic beauty
  • Receive credit to transfer to their home institution
  • Meet people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Become an ambassador for studying in the UK, for the Fulbright Commission and their host institution(s)

The Institute costs covered by the Fulbright Commission and its partner institutions include:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Tuition and fees at the host institution
  • Accommodation
  • In some cases, a small daily allowance for meals

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be a US citizen and possess a US passport
  • Have had no or very little study/travel experience outside of North America
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.7
  • Be at least 18 years old by the start of the programme
  • Be able to participate in the programme in its entirety
  • Have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes

New: Voyager Scholarships for Sophomores Committed to Public Service, Apps due June 14

The Voyager Scholarship is a new initiative to support the next generation of public service leaders with financial aid and travel support. Created by the Obamas and Brian Chesky, Airbnb CEO, the program aims to alleviate the burden of college debt, provide meaningful travel experiences to expand students’ horizons, and a network of mentors and leaders to support them. The Voyager Scholarship is open to students entering their junior year of college at an accredited four-year college or university in the US, who have demonstrated a financial need, and who are US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients.
